[opensuse] curl error-connection time out
Today I finally installing opensuse 11.1 kde 4.2 in all machines. Q. Using yast software manager to update the system very often I get a curl error and a connection time out. I retry and everything is OK. Everything is working OK but I had to be behind the screen to interact all the time with this connection time outs. I do not remember anything like that previously. It may be the server are very busy. Any comments. -=terry=- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Either a broken mirror, or a network problem that gives you problems reaching (a) mirror(s). If you can provide me your IP address and a timeframe when this happened, I can likely find out which mirror is broken and get it fixed (or disabled), or otherwise tell what's wrong. And, you can already test http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover today, if you want, which is the way to go for the future. I get the same problem, connecting from the sf bay area. Looking at iftop, there is one mirror that constantly pops up with zero download speed: opensuse.secsup.org So I guess that would be a good candidate to check for breakage.
And, you can already test http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover today, if you want, which is the way to go for the future.
Way to go!

Thanks for the hint. Testing from a host located in the US, I get a stable 450k/s download rate from this host for an iso image; maybe this doesn't work as well from all locations, or not reliably at all times. I think this would be a great feature and would greatly help the downloading. I have had so many problems redirecting to some dodgy mirrors that will give a curl error after it has slowly downloaded the file til 100% it made me change all my repositories directly to mirrors, but that has also had some problems (I suspect many are doing that). I already voted for the 2 features mentioned in your other email, but I have a question. I am running 11.1 x86_64. My understanding of the above site is the code is already in there, and all I would need is to set the env var ZYPP_ARIA2C=1, so I created /etc/bash.bashrc.local and added export ZYPP_ARIA2C=1, which does show up in my env as well as root's. When i changed the URL for my repositories back to download.opensuse.org, they went from under repositories to under services, but I thought OK, maybe using aria2c changes that and I really don't care, but when opening Software Management, all the moved repositories failed. Did I misunderstand some step? Thanks for working on this problem, it is growing worse as I assume the mirrors get overloaded. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 11.1 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Note that this is to be regarded as a prototype and there may be bugs - which is also why it needs testing, and bugs to be reported. If you look at the aria2c man page you'll see a few environment variables you can set for it to pass options, like a log file. Make sure you use an underscore instead of a dash, as is used in the options, in the options to use them as variables. i.e. --proxy-method=get becomes export proxy_method=get Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Either a broken mirror, or a network problem that gives you problems reaching (a) mirror(s).
If you can provide me your IP address and a timeframe when this happened, I can likely find out which mirror is broken and get it fixed (or disabled), or otherwise tell what's wrong.

Hello,
my IP is 91.11.47.235 or 95.90.93.118. I am updating via yast/zypper from Germany. I have been getting these timeout-errors for days. I just looked at zypper.log:

Could you do something about it? Or is the problem on my side?
Many thanks for your help
Christian
Thank you very much for writing (and Cc'ing me). We indeed see the same timeouts as you. It seems to affect both mirrors from RWTH Aachen University. The timeouts have quite some overlap regarding period of time, so I assume that there is a network issue that both mirrors suffer at the same time. I have notified both mirror admins. I'll leave everything as is for the time being, to improve the chance to analyze and rectify the issue, but I could reduce the mirrors priority later. Thanks for the details that you provided, and the time and effort that you invested into analyzing the issue.
