RE: RE: Re: [SLE] Re: Availability of 8.0 to Canadians
Hello, Gerry:
Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd frankly prefer to revert to Caldera if I cannot reasonably expect SuSE to fulfill an offer they actually made to me through their 'store'. Perhaps the flow of exchanges on this issue will help awaken the green giant.
I'll give it another week or so and then get on with what I must do to keep a timetable here ...

Thanks, Andre, for your thoughtfulness.
I am debating whether to sit around for SuSE, switch to Caldera, or reorder to a US address. Seems pretty stupid, when all I am trying to do is buy from SuSE, exactly as I did last year when they had no trouble sending 7.3 to me, and I rather obviously had no trouble receiving it.
We Canucks are quiet folks, but we do not handle uninformed arrogance very well at all.
Thanks again ....

I find that the local university generally gets SuSE releases in a reasonable time. They bring them in from the US. YOu might want to call a university close to you and see if they have any instock???

Why don't you just order from a retailer? You can have it overnight. I "pre-ordered" 7.1 from SuSE. It took 3 weeks after release to get it even though I was living only 2 hours from SuSE headquarters in Germany. After it arrived in stores I was still waiting for my copy. Now THAT'S frustrating! For 7.3 and 8.0 I ordered from an E-retailer and had my copy the next day. I won't ever order directly from SuSE again. John Scott

The problem was in the past that no retailers in Canada stocked it. This time we got Futureshop to carry it but only because BestBuy (or was it CompUSA?) purchased the Futureshop chain. Buying it online is very expensive because they have to pay a lot of import taxes on it, so much so that places like Amazon won't even ship to Canada. The director of sales told me that he had confirmed that the distributer had shipped to Futureshop on monday of this week so it should be available from them soon. -- -ckm

There shouldn't be any duty or added taxes for shipping software from the US to Canada. There will be extra shipping. A brokerage charge by the shipper but that should be it. We do have a free trade agreement-) Nick

The problem is with the expeditor or whomever SuSE is using to ship to Canada as the boxes are incorreclty labelled. SuSE was kind enough to send a few boxes (7.0) to our LUG in Ottawa and I ended up paying almost 250.00 in duty fees as there was no notation on the shipping docs. To meet the deadline and to promote SuSE locally I paid the fee.....:( Everone was extremely happy to recieve units and I could write it off, but there is really no need for this nor is that the point ) I will stay with this distro that is not the issue but someone really needs to look at this and sort it out quickly and permanently as there are a lot of customers up here both commercical and non commercial and it makes it extremely difficult to promote SuSE with these type of miscaboobles..:) -- Chris H.

I am no expert here but my understanding is "Printed Matter Zero Value" or something to that effect. (Please confirm with your expeditor). Im my case there was no declared value and no notation what so ever, which allowed an 'over zealous non GLP'd clued in' customs inspector to go to his book and look it up. Hence the charge Christospher for three boxes of SuSE...:( -- Chris H.

I'll explain this again for those who have missed my previous posts on this issue. The only authorized distributor of SuSE in Canada is Ingram Micro (Canada) Inc. They in turn get it from their parent company Ingram Micro (USA) Inc. I was told by my Rep. (I work for a store that sell SuSE in Ottawa) at Ingram Micro (Canada) that they are do not have the numbers to order SuSE direct from SuSE, so there American parent purchases it and then it is shipped to Canada. Why, that takes so long I've no idea. As Ingram Micro is the only Authorized distributor of this product in Canada and if all retailers get their orders in early then well should all get it about the same time. My experience to date is that SuSE shows up here about 3 months after the offical annoucement of the product release. If you have problems with the timing of the delivery of this product then I encourage you to find out who are the CEO, President, Vice President and Marketing Heads are at Ingram and email or mail them your concerns. Only loud angry voices are going to make any difference here. Oh, and FutureShop also get SuSE from Ingram Micro so the above will apply to them too.

Maybe it's the brokerage fee that I'm thinking of...in any case, it's expensive. -- -ckm

I will never buy SuSE from a american retailer at all for that matter anything. I bought SuSE 7.2 from a American retail form the US price of $79.95 The exchange rate put it at around $110.00 Canadian. Shipping was $6.95 US to get it to me. Once the package hit the border i got charged 7% GST, 7% PST, $39.00 Canadian brokers fees plus taxes. total is now around $170.00 Canadian. Bought the last copy from retailer in Qubec for $114.95 with free delivery. *--------------------------------* | Chris Large clarge@macn.bc.ca | | http://clarge.bc.ca | *--------------------------------*

In South Africa SuSE 8.0 should be available at the END OF MAY. I paid almost US$240 (mostly airfreight) to have it a.s.a.p from London. I guess the shipping is the thing that costs the most money either air or much cheaper ship(ocean freight) anyway come 8.1 I will gladly pay again ;) and my first cd is screwed ;( (the dvd works gr8 though) Anyone know if I can build a disk1 from the dvd ? (think i need a friendly @suse.de to mail me a /descr tarball .. <hint hint> ) such is life. 02c andre
