I am trying to track down a problem with a program that is supposed to play sounds on certain events but doesn't. The author has developed it on a remote X-server that doesn't support sound, so hasn't tested the sound part on linux (it's a Lin/Win Qt app) - and his linux boxen don't have sound cards anyway. Apparently, the Qt docs talk about something called the Network Audio System - has anyone heard of this? I cannot find anything about it on my system or the installation DVD (SuSE 8.2). The relevant part of the Qt docs apparently says: "On X11 the Network Audio System is used if available, otherwise all operations work silently. NAS supports WAVE and AU files." Yes - the author gave this link. The issue is whether this is common on linux boxes (e.g. is it in SuSE?). If not, he needs to support a different sound system. Don't know now, but it used to be. IIRC, it used to be included in SuSE and was (is?) in Redhat and Slackware.

S/he might be aiming for cross platform compatibility since NAS exist on all Unix platforms and IIRC there is a port to Windoze as well. NAS predates esd and aRtsd.
