Suse 6.4 kernel 2.2.16 Is anyone using XEphem 3.4 Astronomical Software under Suse? I have followed a link to http://loke.as.arizona.edu/~ckulesa/xephem/ - which has rpms for download. However it seems that they need OpenMotif. I understand that this came with Suse 7.0 Pro. Are they available for download? Where ? Has anyone had experience setting up XEphem under Suse. Brian Marr

I complied from source on my SuSE-6.4, 2.2.17 box. I linked it against Lesstif and it worked flawlessly. When I upgraded to the lastest version a few weeks ago I noticed it has a slight problem with the KDE2 window manager. That apart, it works fine for me. It's a great piece of software, BTW!
You can find Open Motif under the pay section. It will conflict with lesstiff if installed, not sure on the consequences if removed and Open Motiff is installed, or lesstiff remains. I have used that software under SuSE before. pre-rpm though. I am currently going to install this and see. I will rebuild the src.rpm and then install the build, if it works I can send it to you. Not sure how this is going to turn out... Matt On Sat, 24 Feb 2001 22:26:53 Brian Marr wrote:

XEphem 3.2 is on SuSE's CDs and installs easily. JLK On Sunday 25 February 2001 00:48, Matthew Johnson wrote:

Looks as though will need RPM version 3.05...SuSE 7.0 is 3.04 and it will not rebuild. I have had 3 cups of Tea (1 English breakfast, 1 Earl Grey and 1 Lady Grey) so I am wired, I am goingh to try and install 3.05, this may cause major damage, but... I'll let you know how it went...Damn RH based systems.. Matt On Sat, 24 Feb 2001 22:26:53 Brian Marr wrote:

I've done both the tar setup of the file from official site before it went commerical and with SuSE's rpms. With the tar file you can put it where you want it and put an XEphem.ed file in your home directory that will hold your config. With SuSE"s I've never been able to get it to recognize the viewing site without messing up the zoom features and star sizes. JLK
~ btw, "Xplns" from www.AstroArts.com runs nice on SuSE best wishes -- ____________ sent on Linux ____________
