Hi I'm running SuSE 7.0 with the 2.2.16 at the moment, and I've been trying to update the kernel to 2.4.4. The problem is that I don't *really* know what I'm doing when it comes to compiling the kernel. I've got Mantel's 2.4.4 sources, and tried various ways of building it (e.g. make cloneconfig, or make xconfig and picking likely looking options, etc.) However, none of my builds have been entirely successful. On the latest one, it's got problems loading sound modules, and says it can't find the eth0 module for my network card, and I can't run yast2 in X - the password prompt doesn't appear. Anyway, the ideal route would be to install the RPM version, but that doesn't have Reiser support, and all my partitions (except /boot) are Reiser, so that doesn't get me very far. Is there any way I can get the .config of the RPMed kernel, and reiser support to it, then rebuild? Also, any other hints and tips you can throw my way would be appreciated Thanks Olly
Hi Olly, Mantel's rpm do support ReiserFs, but you have to add 2 modules to INITRD_MODULES in rc.config: aic7xxx reiserfs. Aic7xxx won't load correctly when booting, but you can ignore it (it's necessary for Reiserfs). First you have done: rpm -Uhv kernel...rpm, next just: mk_initrd, lilo and reboot. aic7xxx is the driver module for a class of scsi adapters from Adaptec. What makes you think it's required for reiserfs? Anders On Friday 15 June 2001 11:15, Nash Hoogwater wrote:
