Yast2 fails to set up scanners (was: Re: [SUSE Linux Users] Lide-30 scanner)

It's been a long time since I've encountered a version of xsane that didn't Just Work (TM) with my Canon Lide-30 scanner, but the version installed by Yast (SuSE 10.0) apparently needs some tweaking. (On my system SuSE is booted by Debian's bootloader, so I verified that the scanner was working properly.) It's a popular scanner, so maybe someone who has it working will describe the steps they took.

I'm currently in much the same situation... trying to get a scanner working on 9.3. This very same scanner was a breeze to set up years ago in Red Hat 9, so it's kind of funky that Yast2 horks on it. I might have to give RH another look. Robert, in just the past 24 hours I posted here on this issue, mentioning some commands I ran. You might want to try running the same ones. You and I might be looking at the same problem. -- "This world ain't big enough for the both of us," said the big noema to the little noema.
