[opensuse] Cursor weirdness after last updates? Cursor changes themes when I move over firefox, tbird, etc.
Guys, This one is just weird. I have the 'Azenis' cursor theme set in just about all desktops. It's a great cursor theme, consistent and well placed hot-spot, good precision cursor, etc.... All has been working well. Now however, in kde, if I'm over kde apps, I get the correct Azenis theme, but, if I move the mouse over firefox, thunderbird, or other... non-kde package, the cursor changes. (I can't really generalize with 'gtk' app because gimp has the right cursor). Even weirder, right now I'm in kde3 on 11.0, if I put the cursor over the window decoration on this thunderbird email, the cursor is fine, but if I move the cursor down to the menu bar, the cursor changes to another theme. How? I have read some thread about this being a problem in 2008 after an Xorg update. Have we had a regression? Checking .Xdefaults, the default cursor was listed as tronnix, which shouldn't be, but I do have a tronnix theme on my box. Also, checking .kde/share/config/startupconfig, I have kcminputrc_mouse_cursortheme="Azenis", which is correct. So, umm..., what gives? What else to check? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. After more investigation, the problem appears after gnome-settings-daemon is started. So gnome guys, what to check? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. The problem ended up being a bug with the way gnome in 11.0 handles root logins. I had logged into gnome to check a permissions problem and had set the cursors theme for root. Somehow that gets applied to all (almost all) gtk apps for every user of the system. Logging in as root and changing the cursor to Azenis at least sets the Azenis theme for users in kde now. That is a 'HACK' because the problem/bug is not fixed, it's just bandaided to get a consistent cursor theme. Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this problem so if I change cursors again, I don't have to login to gnome as root and change the cursor there as well? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. It seems we should not try to customize the desktop when using it as root. I have no idea how to mend the damage. Global settings should be under /etc, don't they :-? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Thanks Carlos, I'll pick around and see if I can find it. I have bigger problems with the latest update to the Xsetting plugin to gnome-settings-daemon causing a segfault on x86-64 under kde.
