[opensuse] Blue video in all video apps openSUSE 11/KDE 4.1
Hey everyone, I have a question about playing and ripping video. I recently upgraded my laptop from 10.3 to 11. So far, I am fairly impressed, especially with the new package management. It's fast! However, I have a problem playing back videos and also ripping video. It doesn't matter which type (avi, mpeg, mpg), they all result in a blue video window, but I can hear the audio. I have tried, Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC, SMplayer...all the same result. So I assume I am missing a codec (or several). However, I have installed the w32-codecs package from Packman, also libxine1- w32dll from Packman, Mplayer from Packman, SMPlayer from Packman... Can someone please tell me what more I could be missing? Yes, like I said above, then Mplayer plays the video. Like it should, I meant. So normal picture, normal sound. I can just watch it.

Hi CyberOrg, I am up to date with the latest updates as of this morning. So I doubt that is the cause of the issue. I am a bit reluctant to turn on Xgl. This is mainly a work machine so I don't wish to slow it down or anything. I don't have 3D enabled on this machine either. My experience with Xgl on 10.3 was that is was still rather buggy. Is this better in 11? That would explain my experience on 10.3 then... :-) But Xgl or not, I think video playback should work properly regardless of the fact I am running Xgl. I take it you agree with that? Ok, great, the mplayer output is irrelevant then. I would assume using, mplayer -vo xv <filename> will give the blue screen again? If so it is an overlay problem, I have no experience with the "intel" driver (I used "i810" before and it worked). I have always used the i810 driver, never the intel. I couldn't really get some clear info on the difference. i810 is apparently old and intel replaces it? See http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/documentation.html This confuses me even more - see question "Question: Does the driver support the Xv extensions?" "Answer To better support the Composite extension, the Intel graphics driver supports --for i915 and later-- textured video which uses the 3D hardware to paint the video directly to the frame buffer instead of using an overlay. This means there's no funny 'blue' image caused by the color key, and it means you can capture video frames with normal X tools." So I guess the answer is no? XV is not supported and the video is directly painted to the (GL) frame buffer? So you should use "-vo gl" when using the intel driver (but now Im out of my league) May someone else with bit more background can help out? I have always used the i810 driver, never the intel. I couldn't really get some clear info on the difference. i810 is apparently old and intel replaces it?
Well, I guess newer isn't always better... :-)

Yes...I should not see a blue image with the new driver because the driver paints directly into the frame buffer...but I am seeing a blue image. Could this have anything to do with the fact that I have NOT enabled 3D acceleration in my X config? If you're out of your league then I am even more so. Thanks for all your help, at least now I can see the videos and convert to place on our website, which is what I wanted to do in the first place. However, if someone with (even) more knowledge in this area wants to step in and give a better explanation, please do! So I am not considering this one [SOLVED] yet. Thanks Manne!
