Not necessarioly SuSE related, but a common problem I guess: I've browsed the woeful HP documentation on the JetDirect stuff and can't find any details on how to print to ports other than the default on a multi-port JetDirect print server. My guess was different printer names; but what are the names? -- Bernd Felsche - Innovative Reckoning Perth, Western Australia -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hi there,
I too like you am having trouble setting up a HP 4000 TN printer with
onboard JetDirect port. I
can't even get it to print to the default port (there is only one). It
prints no problem when
configured for parallel. If you have any tips, I would be eternally
grateful.
Searching the HP website is a waste of time.
Keith Gibbons.

and text1, text2, ... I guess. Thanks. I'll try that when I'm next on site. Just need to educate the site admin. There's a Linux box supposed to be taking over the print spooling. -- Bernd Felsche - Innovative Reckoning Perth, Western Australia -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You will forgive a Linux "newbie" for replying (but I am a printer techie!). If it prints ok when using the parallel port, then the problem is (again!) in the configuration. As far as I understand it, the basic system works like this: You click "Print" (or type cat.., whatever) The output from that file is *dumped to "lpr".* "lpr" then calls a *couple of programs* to work out just what you have sent it (text, PostScipt, HTML, etc). Once the *type is determined*, and formatted accordingly, (by the other process), the job is then handed back to "lpr" with the condition that says "we have formatted this data-dump in accordance with the *printer-type* we have been informed you are using." At this point "lpr" then sends the (formatted) job to the printer *it has been told to expect* at the location the *printer should be at*. Look at the *..* bits. These are the areas where something actually happens. These are (conversely) the areas that things can go wrong in. Although I haven't been able to directly answer your question, I may have at least helped you to narrow down the cause of it. Hope this Helps

Forgive my newness to this sort of thing, but what is the "default" you are talking about here?
