Creative Labs AWE32 ISA sound card
Hello Linux folkz, I've got an old Creative Labs AWE32 ISA sound card. Just today I compiled kernel 2.4.8 with the following sound drivers as a modules: awe_wave mpu401 sb sb_lib sound soundcore uart401 After rebooting I have no sound and only these messages: modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-180 insmod: insmod: a module named soundcore already exists insmod: insmod: insmod char-major-14 failed modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-1 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-1-0 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-116 Could somebody tell me please which sound-slot and sound-service is associated with which module from /lib/modules/2.4.8/kernel/drivers/sound? How to enable my sound card in /etc/modules.conf? Thank you in advance for any help or source of information. Alex Daniloff wrote: Possibly, your /etc/modules.conf contains entries generated by YaST sound setup. these reffer to ALSA drivers (/usr/src/linux/misc) which should be get separately. Thus, to get sound back you need either get these ALSA drivers, (or get mantel's kernel at ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel) or to configure it manually with OSS drivers. (see kernel documentation) both works fine with me, good luck

I use that card; mine has beautiful jumpers, so is not the Plug and Pray
one; check if yours is PnP.
I think those extra lines come from not commented lines in
/etc/modules.conf; look carefully, specially around lines related to the
Alsa package, which you don't use.
Resources are defined in /etc/modules.conf; in my case:
alias char-major-14 sb
post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "awe_wave"
post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "opl3"
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=0 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
options opl3 io=0x0388
alias sound-slot-0 sb
alias sound-service-0-1 awe_wave
If using Alsa:
#alias char-major-14 soundcore
#alias char-major-116 snd
#alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
#alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
#alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
#alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
#alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
#alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
#options snd-card-sbawe snd_index=0 snd_id=card1 snd_port=0x220
snd_mpu_port=0x330 snd_fm_port=0x388 snd_irq=5 snd_dma8=0 snd_dma16=5
(shown commented)
Also, check 'cat /proc/interrupts', for the sound irq.
BTW, my card has an IDE connector. I use it configured as cuaternary IDE
(0x168+, IRQ10), with a CDROM.
