[opensuse] How often should I update?
Hi, I'm using openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.2.1, with which I'm very happy. :) But I'm not sure how often I should update my system. In other words, what is the difference between the installed and available package in kde4-dolphin 4.2.1-75.5(4.2.1-75.7)? The righthandmost (is that a word?) digit seems to increment itself by 1 each day, and this is true of all the packages in KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop. Are these changes significant, or should I be watching the first integer following the dash? Thanks, Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.1, Kernel 2.6.27.19-3.2-default, KDE 4.2.1 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9200GS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The righthandmost (is that a word?) digit seems to increment itself by 1 each day, and this is true of all the packages in KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop. Are these changes significant, or should I be watching the first integer following the dash? I am not an expert, so take my words with a pinch of low salt. The righthandmost digit is the build digit. Next to that is the patch number. I generally go by patch numbers. Now if things seem to work well for me then I do not bother updating but wait till the next release by KDE.

If everything you need works, i.e. no crashes etc, IMHO you should not update until the next KDE release, i.e. 4.2.2. Actually I'm not even sure if you should update then if you are happy with your current packages. There is always the risk that something changes to the worse. If there are bugs/crashes, report them at bugs.kde.org and update after those patches were included in the opensuse packages. If you provide a link to the bugs that include the patches and post them on the opensuse-kde mailinglist, they should be included within some days.
