I switched to SuSE at 8.2 and I've loved it. I bought 9.0 and 9.1, but have not yet installed either. I'm a bit concerned about stories of file corruption with reiserfs in 9.1 (2.6 kernel). "getting things working" problem I can deal with by putting the new version on my test partition and working on it in the evenings, but corrupted filesystems are a bigger concern. Of course there's a greater propensity to hear from those having troubles on a mailing list, but I would like to see if those having success with 9.1 would care to chime in on a quick survey. Just a simple note saying if your 9.1 install is a success, whether you did a clean install, an update of an existing system, or both (clean install on system partition(s) but left other partitions (like /home) untouched, what type of filesystems you are using, and anything else that might be relevant. Those of us who are Weekend Warriors with SuSE will appreciate the warm fuzzies... -- -M There are 10 kinds of people in this world: Those who can count in binary and those who cannot.

SuSE 9.1 Professional, clean install using existing ReiserFS and swap partitions (9.0 Pro erased during process) - patched to latest versions except for Gnome 2.6 with apt. Dual boot Windows XP Pro & SuSE Creative Live 5.1 Digital, four external Firewire drives (NTFS), Dazzle multifunction card reader, HP 5300C scanner (USB), ADS Pyro webcam (Firewire) Scanner doesn't work (worked sometime in 9.0) Webcam doesn't work (never worked in 9.0) Internal Zip 250 drive (IDE) was not installed properly. Adding a line to fstab fixed it. Can't browse Windows network from machine (very common problem with Samba client), but Samba server works perfectly. Some sounds don't work (like KDE startup and shutdown sounds - this is a KDE 3.2 problem) Everything else works beautifully. No more problems than I would expect with this much hardware. Same exact problem here. Could I beg you to post what that line was and where to put it? I guess to respect the thread I should add that 9.1 works perfectly for me (as a simple home user, not in any kind of "production" environment.) I'm not sure how one would know if one's file system were corrupted or not. Maybe the characters in tuxkart would start driving backwards... :-) Anyway on my newly purchased AMD Athlon 64 3200+ on a Gigabyte K8N Pro MB with 1GB DDR 400 RAM and a GeForce FX 5700 video card everything except the Zip Drive is running fine. -- Bryce Hardy (Santa Rosa, CA USA) cygnia@sonic.net

(on my machine) /dev/hdb4 /media/zip auto noauto, user 0 0 You can put it anywhere in your fstab file. -- Keith Kastorff kastorff@yahoo.com

2 successful installs. 1 clean install preserving /home partition, 1 update. ReiserFS on all. SCSI scanner, ide cdburner(s), sound card(s), NVIDIA binary drivers. No problems except for some OpenOffice instability. KDE 3.2 is quite nice.

I have installed 9.1 (clean) on a laptop. One on a desktop partition (clean). One upgrade on a desktop partition. The only difficult one was the upgrade. Go through and resolve EVERY conflict and it will go smoothly. Most conflicts were to set the old conflicting app as unprotected. On that partition I have avoided all YOU updates and instead have used Apt-get exclusively. All went extremely well.

Just a simple note saying if your 9.1 install is a success,
yes, but I have installed 9.1 pro and 9.1 personal ... always a clean install is safer.. or we Suse folks just got used to it while they were getting thier system in line w/ everyone elses.. ( put these files in this directory always, sort of stuff) It had to be done slowly, of course or risk breaking everyone else's solid if older Suse systems. Generally, of course it does help get rid of a lot of stuff you downloaded to look at, maybe did or didnt actually try it, and don't remember why it's there any more.. I'm not sure it's relelvant, but I prefer the Xfs system.. it's nice and fast, seems more than stable, and so far hasn't had any catastrophes. OF course, I'm more than a bit paranoid so I tend to back up everything that is important to me... some config files , largely programs That I downloaded and use, but which might not be on the Pro discs ( you wouldnt think that posible, but it is... )
Those of us who are Weekend Warriors with SuSE will appreciate the warm fuzzies...
Suse has been my choice since 7.0 anyway, I think I even had a version before that that someone gave me to try... My first ventures into Linux were , well forced. We had been an Os/2 only shop... and when it got to the point were they were only doing "stealth" releases , we weren't certain we could rely on IBM any more. They , in the person of the Cracker salesman, or shoe salesman, whatever he was, had lied to the community so often. I beta tested w2k and soon discovered they weren't actually interested in what the beta testers had to say.. got one copy... which was used for a few months.. three worms later, one of which was fatal... my boss noticed a linux box in the corner of my office that I was "playing w/" Corel's version, if you can believe it.. I also had a copy of RedHat something that came w/ a book, and was among the most "opiniated" releases I tried. Definition of opinionated in that case is, no matter what I selected, it installed what the Red hat folks felt was the correct setup.. largely Gnome, which gave me the Macintosh Willies... nooooooooooo!! Still, my boss noticed the Corel box hadn't been rebooted in a month. We had already had a worker nearlly decapitated by teh w2k box, when he attempted to make a backup disk of his work product ( note HIS , not Windows stuff) The backup program spit the disk out at his head.. w/o even the goodness to do the damned backup first! IT wasn't too much longer before teh first Suse boxes began proliferating... it was easy for most os/2ers , used to having their own way , at least w/ the look of the desktop and icons and that sort of thing ... and to have programs that actually did as they were told w/o locking up everything... Granted, those boxes were higher powered than the requirements said, but they always had been as much artsy craftsy stuff was doable in OS/2 And lets face it, creative stuff, other than writing seems to eat memory, always! Nowadays we even have 9.1 on a clone of an Emachine! and soon to be on a real one. If you need a quick cheapy test bed, you can't beat it..w/ dvd plus and minus read write it was less than $350! Looks a bit like a cylon warrior, the way they built teh case, and the location of the cd which came w/ it.. unused but left where it is because it just looks so damned cool it even says by your command and other Cylonish things.. thanks to a member of one of these lists... and Our "imperious leader", whose box it is couldn't be more tickled w/ it... IF you are an OS/2er, you'll find many of the former and even present users.. I'd still have a box if I had time to play w/ it.. I miss dragtext desparately.. but, gotta move on w/ the times I guess. hope this gives you some of the warm and fuzzies you were looking for... Tho many here are often somewhat prickly, it's ususally because we are up to our ears in some sort of aligators, stuff ranging from work to school to combinations of both... Just do not do one thing that will get you nastygrams... do NOT cross post to other lists... AND, of course use the mailing list to reply , and don't add the person as a CC, we are all on the list, or wouldn't have seen your message in the first place.. ;) -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit it's just an afterthought; okay ? : "Don't pull dad's finger when he tells you to. Clean install on a older PC with SCSI and IDE, no problems. Clean install on new Dell w/o SCSI but with USB storage, no problems. Ran YOU on both systems before doing any real work at all. Apache, PHP, MySQL, OpenOffice, Konqueor added Netscape 7.1. Older unit for testing, new runs 20 users via X-Stations and VNC. Greg Engel

I tried an upgrade from 9 > 9.1 using the dvd and no way could I get it to find the media...I also tried with the cd's ...Same result.. I then wiped and formatted the drive from my Debian partition them installed 9.1... ...I now find yast tells me I do not have a printer connected (dj610c) and it cannot setup the s/card (sb/live) Both of these items are readily piced up and installed using Fedora and Debian,Slackware requires a little tweaking but all works ok...... The last 3 distros are free and Suse is not....... If I had to pay from a distro Libranet would be my choice based on Debian adminmenu second to none and everything works out of the box... In my opinion for an easy install Fedora must comes first although for me Debian rules .. -- Regards Ted Wager Using Debian Linux
9.1 works fine. Clean install on 2nd hd, with XP on 1st. Could not figure out how to implement fs other than Reiser. Had to ask how to get kmail to send, got it working but lost instructions. Still having trouble with scanner (haven't worked on some suggestions yet) altho YAST found the SCSI scanner, and have not hooked up sound output, so don't know if it works. Bought Linux WordPerfect 8 and it works, except for the right hand keypad with NumLock turned off, which the WP people said was not implemented :-( On every other app that keypad works. (I like to use the Del key on that keypad, since it's right next to my trackball.) I would sure like to see the entire Linux partition in the "My Computer" window, but can't do that. Can (and did) rename stupid window name to "This Computer". Several days ago I decided to leave the machine running, and it is solid, probably about a week uptime-- I don't know how to make the system tell me how long. --doug On Thursday 03 June 2004 02:16, Ted wrote:
