empty root partition shows as full in YaST and KDiskFree but not in KDirStat
Hi - Have just finished setting up a new install of SuSE 9.0 but I have encountered the following problem: - my root partition is showing as full even though it is clearly pretty much empty the partition set up is: 3 hard disks - hdi (57.2GB) contains: -- hdi1 for / (46.0GB) -- hdi2 for /install (install files from SuSE FTP - 10.0GB) -- 1.2GB swap - hdk (74.5GB) contains: -- hdk1 for /windows/C (separate windows HD with NTFS has all 74.5GB) -hdl (74.5GB) contains: -- hdl1 for /home (separate partition for /home has all 74.5GB) Additionally I have a 180GB external firewire HD formatted as NTFS (sda1) which mounts on /windows/D There is absolutely no way any of these HDs are anywhere near full (yet)! However, whenever I attempt to install anything with YaST I get a warning telling me that "hard disk is nearly full" and that there is only 165MB of free space in the root partition. KDiskFree tells me the same thing. However, KDirStat says that there is only 2.5GB of stuff in the whole of the root partition. I have tried unmounting hdk1 and sda1 (windows internal and firewire HDs) to see if these were producing the problem but I still get the error. I'm probably missing something really obvious here, but if anyone can shine any light on the cause of this problem and how to fix it, I would be really grateful! Thanks in advance, Chris Townson

outpur from df -h is as follows: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hdi1 47G 46G 165M 100% / /dev/hdl1 75G 2.8G 72G 4% /home /dev/hdi2 11G 7.3G 2.8G 73% /install /dev/hdk1 75G 24G 51G 32% /windows/C tmpfs 505M 0 505M 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 187G 77G 110G 42% /windows/D I don't know if it is relevant, but I started (then subsequently abandoned) a complete system backup (with YaST System Backup tool). It shouldn't really be relevant 'cos I set it to backup into /install...but I thought I'd mention it just in case. Chris

Thanks Patrick - I'd never actually found a need to use midnight commander before, but it certainly made it much clearer where the disk usage was taking place: YaST System Backup had made an enormous collection of archives in /tmp/ DkJcaPp5Gp/ taking up the entire hard disk. Presumably, the reason that the backup ground to a halt (which was why I had to abandon it) was because it ran out of space for the next archive or there wasn't room in the target volume. Am now back to a much more usable 7% full hard drive! I suppose the next question is why YaST requires so much space to back up 3GB worth of stuff...?! Thanks again, Chris

Can not answer that question authoritatively, but I am glad that you are operative again. gud luk, -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos
