Re: [SLE] Still Desperate: KDE 2.1.1 Won't Work
Tim, Ralph, I can confirm all that you have said. I tried using qt-experimental with KDE 2.01 and got the kicker crash. Symptom is that the panel does not appear on boot. I have a log of XFree86 startup if you are interested. It contains lots of bleating about DCOP. So then I downloaded XFree86 4.0.3 and KDE 2.1.1 and installed qt-experimental version 2.3.0. Sure enough, same kicker crash. [See also http://dot.kde.org/985720278/985723293/985851880/985906834/986035842/ and http://dot.kde.org/985720278/985771030/985857224/ ] BUT I had not followed Nadeen Hasan's instructions. So then I followed them and made sure I had a working set of TrueType fonts, AND I turned on anti-aliasing by using Nadeen's method of adding the following line to /etc/profile.local export QT_XFT=true [See http://www.nadmm.com/show.php?story=articles/aafonts-HOWTO.inc ] So THEN instead of having kicker crash, every time I logged in I just got a black screen and was returned back to kdm. Finally, I deleted /etc/profile.local. So now I have TrueType fonts but NO anti-aliasing. I really suspect there is something wrong with the combination of qt-experimental version 2.3.0 and XFree86 4.0.X RENDER extension, possibly having to do with my setup. I am using ATI R128 with DRI and v4l. I can send you a copy of my XF86Config file if you are interested. So I really should report this to feedback@suse.de - it looks like there is enough evidence. Best regards
