You should try xmms, its a better player anyway.

I think I tried xmms a couple of times while trying to get my sound card to work. I just tried it again and it is pretty nice. The main reason I want to use Real Player is that it has a decent volume while the other players are so quiet it's hard to hear them. (The must be at least a dozen places to set the volume so I may have missed one.) Xmms isn't too bad in that department, though. However, I can't seem to get it to play a CD either.

What kind computer is this?

It's a custom-built Epiq, 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4, 1 Gbyte RAM, 120 GByte hard disk. It was built to run Windows XP but is now running SuSE Linux 9.0. The sound "card", by the way, is built into the motherboard. There really is no card. The setup under Windows worked. I used the CD-ROM to digitally rip CDs and to play them.

The reason I ask is sometimes the analog output wire of the cdrom drive is not wired to the motherboard/sound card. This is especially common in laptops. Some windows players will still play the disk by reading it digitally. Xmms will to that for you as well if you enable that input-plug in. I don't think RealPlayer will read digitally.

Yes, see Visualizations / Visualization Plugins /Audio Plugins / Input Plugins Libcdread.so (select it and check the enable box) That will read the disk digitally.

Just to make sure we're playing off the same sheet of music, I'm using xmms version 1.2.8. I don't see libcdread.so anywhere. I looked in all the tabs. The closest I could come was libcdaudio.so, which I assume is the analog module. I also installed the package "xmms-plugins' and it sure enough gave me a bunch more but I still can't find libcdread.so. Do I have to go somewhere else to get it? Don Henson

If the "hardware info" option is run from the hareware section of YaST2, click on the CDROM or DVD device information and make a note of the device name. It will be "/drv/sr0" or /dev/dvd" or similar. Then run XMMS, click on the eject button. On the source button, type in the device id as shown above, making sure an audio CD is in the drive. Click on the "OK" button and the CD should start to play.

You must be using a different version of xmms. The only button that might be an eject button brings up a file dialog. I've tried putting /dev/hdd (that's what YaST says it's name is) but that doesn't work. Do I need some kind of plug-in to play audio CDs? Don Henson

Which cd playing plugin are you going to use (cd Audio Player or CDDA Paranoia- only enable one)? Did you configure it? Once you have configured it, just point to the cdrom mount point. The difference between the two is that the "CD Audio Player" plugin sends the sound directly to the card bypassing any effects plugin that you have enable.
