Well, 4 lines is considered to be the maximum "polite" length by many. - -- Cheers, Chris Howells -- chris@chrishowells.co.uk, howells@kde.org Web: http://chrishowells.co.uk, PGP ID: 33795A2C KDE: http://www.koffice.org, http://printing.kde.org, http://usability.kde.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+sT2wF8Iu1zN5WiwRAhd2AKCWzFSnNk5eDL50Mf2PcJ9zamykLACeLpv5 wXB5fmDF5KpUZFtpjfML7F0= =CcOg -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

A script that outputs different lines. For example you could set up fortune using your own quote file, that's probably the simplest solution
#quote on line 3 # quote by LNS, later to be change to a series of quotes by him & others to change once per X minutes
this quote line isn't actually one line, it's 5 lines, making your whole sig 10 lines. The quote is also certifiably insane, but that's another story
On Thu, 01 May 2003, Joe just had to get this off his chest:

Make your own fortune cookies. personal-cookies: cookie 1 % cookie 2 % cookie 3 strfile personal-cookies personal-cookies.dat fortune /path/to/personal-cookies.dat
# .sig file, show version, kernal, hostname on line one [..] # end
Read about here-docs in man bash. echo and file redirect is rather slow and resource consuming. #v+ cat <<EOD > .signature `cat /etc/SuSE-release |grep -i suse` | Kernel `uname -r` / `uname -m` | Posted from: `hostname` `uptime` Wear a gun to someone ... .. nqs@tmcom.com | Blog: http://tigger.tmcom.com/~nqs/blogger.html | GPG key can be found at: http://pgpkeys.mit.edu:11371/ | Geek Code: http://tigger.tmcom.com/~nqs/geek_code.html EOD #v- And read about RFC-bloody-1855 please, specially the bit about sig lengths.
