Gentlemen: I've been looking around for backup programs for my SuSE 9.0 Pro. I understand that Bacula and star are good programs to use for backing up files. It would be interesting to hear other opinions. ---Jim
Same here! I thought that a "Professional" OS would come with decent backupsolution - just compare to WinXP: it has a great backupsoftware that can even backup files that are use (only it doesn't do any software compressions itself). But from SuSE... we get nothing. Well there is tar, but it is hardly comparable... and probably can not handle open files correctly.
Suggestions are welcome (rather OpenSource or otherwise freeware as 9.1 Pro already costs enough...)

Something like a GPL Norton/Symantic GHOST program would be great! However, I do plan to look at star and bacula very seriously. ---Jim --- Msg sent via DIT Online WebMail http://mail.ditol.com

And, if I'm not mistaken, a copy of it comes on the Knoppix 3.4 (?) distro live-cd. James-- you don't know if it supports burning to DVD/RW at all? I got rather miffed at Norton Ghost 9.0... Spent some good money on it this weekend, only to find out it's not really the old "Ghost" program, but rather a re-branded drive image. It just completely craps out trying to write to my DVD/RW.

No, I've never used that package. I own a copy of Drive Image, from a few years ago. However, it's been a while since I've had much need of it and when I did use it, it was to save & restore images, stored on a server, though sometimes restored from CD too.
If anyone is after a complete backup and rescue system have a look at Mondo Rescue. http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/ For SuSE rpm packages http://www.mikenjane.net/~mike/ -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Just be careful you don't need more than 50 media - it will barf. I found DAR to be much more flexible. Faster too. Mike- -- If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs... Noted, but I generally backup to a DVD and haven't had any problems. The DVD I use is in an external USB housing so I can move the burner to any computer I want. The nice thing about Mondo is that you can put the DVD into another machine with a new harddisk and boot off the DVD and have Mondo create a complete system without any mucking around on my part. In other words it is great for cloning a system. The main difference between dar and Mondo is that dar is only a backup and restore program. Mondo on the otherhand backs up the complete operating system, partitions and all and is capable of restoring the complete operating system on another hard disk, just by booting the CD/DVD. Mondo functions more like ghost or partimage, but is far more flexible and complete disk recovery system than the fore mentioned. Each has it place. I suggest that you use Mondo initially to create a complete system backup onto CD/DVD. Then use dar to backup your data on a daily/weekly basis. That way you can quickly recover from a hard disk crash using mondo, then restore your data using dar. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Mike,

This week if my test that is running right now works. If it finishes in time, I'll run the compare and see what happens. If that works, I'll nuke the system tomorrow evening. Then I'll put them up if they work. Be advised, they are the 1.03/2.03 versions. I had a bunch of problems with the 04 release, and have to work on them before getting them out. For versions from SuSE 7.3 to 9.1 are available here as well as notes re installation. http://www.mikenjane.net/~mike/ Dependences for SuSE 9.1 afio buffer cdrecord dosfstools dvd+rw-tools mkisofs syslinux Documentation (although a bit sparce) you will find on the main mondo site. http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/ A word of warning. I found that running mondoarchive without options failed to write to a DVD. You have to fully specify all the options on the command line. e.g. Running Mondoarchive to backup to a DVD (USB interface) mondoarchive -OVr -d /dev/sr0 -gF -s4200m -E /local/SuSE Have a look at http://phazeman.mail333.com/Mondo_Rescue_CD_HOWTO.htm as a starter. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look next chance I get. I'm also working on the versions for 9.2, and have a backup running right now. If it works, and I can do a restore, I'll put them up on the site later this week. Mike

Is this your site? Can I link to it from mine? Thanks Mike

Thats great to hear as I like to create a backup of my computers onto DVD just in case of the unknown. I wish to thank you for providing these rpm's as it really takes the pain out of trying to get mondo installed.

No, at the present time I don't have a Web presence. The above link appears on the main document page for Mondo, marked as "Phazeman has written a HOWTO for newbies." -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
