I asked a question about peer to peer networking a while ago and was told to use samba I finally got round to trying this a couple of days ago but can't seem to get it to work Could someone give me a list of the steps I need to follow? I can get details of how to do each bit from man pages etc, but I'm not sure if what I've done is sufficient. When it is all set up, what will I be able to do? Will I be ale to access files from W98 machines? If so, how? I looked for the samba howto and couldn't find it. I used the Linux Handbook, but to no avail. The documentation I was refered to doesn't seem to be there either a copy of either would be greatly appreciated Julia Jerry Kreps wrote:

there are two docs in the usr/packages/dcs directrory or somthing. They will explian how to set it up. If you cant find them go to yast , find the samba package and select the additional info selection. that will show you were the docs are and what is installed and where its all installed. next chck out www.samb.org and linuxnewbie.org/com for the howtos. Hi, Julia: I think you should go to: http://www.oreilly.com Then, type in a search for "Using Samba" Then, look for the book description and click on the icon Then, look for the link, "Online Book" html Then, buy the book when you can for a reference on your shelf! You'll have fun, and the questions can be referenced from this starting point. Now, one other resource is on the ibm.com site: Find the "REDBOOKS" link [it's probably around there somewhere] When you make it to the list, click on the one that says, SUSE and XSeries Servers, and in that book [also online], is a really good section on SWAT, which you'll want to get used to as well. There, hope that helps, Tom

if you don't mind spending a few sheckels for a book, i'd recommend: _the linux network_ fred butzen and christopher hilton idg books worldwide it thoroughly covers smb and other issues with clarity and style that is rare in the linux community. good luck larry Julia Maddocks wrote:

The Samba book "Teach Yourself Samba in 24 hours" by Gerald Carter and Richard Sharpe (Samba team members) was excellent. Over one weekend I set up a Linux system as a PDC and set up NT clients to authenticate. The book is a couple of years old, but everything still applies.
