Is it okay to announce the release of a new version of an open source
Hello everyone, program here? If not, please excuse this message! :-)<<< If it's alright to announce a release here: I thought some of you here may be interested in the new Bochs 1.1.2 release. This release continues the bug fixing releases that started as Bochs transitioned into a Sourceforge project earlier this year. We are hoping to get RPM's up at some future date, but for now it still requires a simple compiling process to use Bochs 1.1.2. You can find out more at: http://bochs.sourceforge.net Best, Tim (Bochs Web Admin) -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. I was reminded off the list that I forgot to say what Bochs does. Bochs is an x86 emulator that runs on many different platforms and processors. It can emulate a 386, 486, or a Pentium/586 level processor. It has been known to successfully run Windows, Linux, and BSD, among other OSes. -Tim On Saturday 19 May 2001 01:11 pm, Timothy R.Butler wrote:

Would perhaps be a suitable replacement for WINE for running windows based games (I know, silly question, but I'm a gaming addict) On Saturday 19 May 2001 21:00, Timothy R.Butler wrote:

Probably not- I've just downloaded it and the developers are not yet looking for speed. You're more likely to be better off with WINE at the moment, but check the site for yourself. HTH Terence
As I understand it, wine and boch are two entirely different animals. wine attempts to implement WinAPI, while boch emulates the hardware. More a replacement for VMWare, I'd say Anders On Sunday 20 May 2001 03:28, Curtis Rey wrote:

Hello Curtis,

To the best of my knowledge, it is still too slow for running most new games, however the developers are working hard to speed up Bochs, and bring in new hardware support (i.e. new virtual video cards, etc.). If you are willing to try it out, and see how your favorite games work (and then let us know how it goes), it would be most appreciated though! The obvious questions: how reliably and consistently does it work for Windows (95, 98, ME) emulation? And what's the performance hit? Paul
Hi Paul,
The obvious questions: how reliably and consistently does it work for Windows (95, 98, ME) emulation? And what's the performance hit?
It's pretty slow at the moment (in other words, there is a very noticeable delay between physical mouse movement and the mouse actually moving, and programs take way longer to start). Although then again, you may be able to actually get it running faster than I have (I'm running it on a PII 450 under KDE 2.1.2). Bochs right now should be thought more of as a technology preview rather than a program that is useful for things like running Windows. I can say this, Bochs _is_ being very actively developed after nearly a year of mainly stagnation, so keep watching the project. <shameless plug> Bochs is also looking for coders to help with things such as performance, and ideally maybe even dynamic translation (which if I understand right, is how Win4Lin works). So, if anyone here would like to help speed it up, please use the form on the site to contact Bryce Denney about joining the project. :-) Anyway, if it sounds interesting, I'd give it a whirl, see what you think, and submit bug reports if you have the opportunity. Even if it isn't very fast, there is something certainly facinating about watching a computer spring to life inside a little window! -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R.
