So - I've got an iomega REV (35Gb removable hard disk) drive, and am trying to use MicroLite's BackupEdge software. 9.2 and earlier worked fine - with SuSe Professional 9.3 it broke, and it's still broken with 10.0 The issue seems to be related to blocking. It WRITES just fine (returns no errors) for any size files, and it will READ small files just fine, but when I try to back up a whole directory, it returns a bunch of errors - edge says "Directory not in proper format"; but there's nothing in /var/log/messages or anywhere else that I can find. Has anyone else seen this? Has anyone else got a REV working with 10.x Thanks in advance! Clay Jackson

MicroLite's BackupEdge
Hi Clay, I'm assuming you've been to this page?: http://www.backupedge.com/Technical_Support/technical_support.html If the only application that is stumbling is BackupEdge, and if the only error messages you can find are coming from BackupEdge... then the odds are your problem is with BackupEdge, not the hardware or Linux. This probability is made even more likely given that BackupEdge runs OK under 9.2 and earlier. You probably just need to get a more recent version of BackupEdge, no? - Carl
Hi - thanks! Yeah, I've been to that page many times and have contacted MicroLite, and have the latest and greatest version of BackupEdge. Nothing works (in fact, straight tar doesn't work either); but, the drive works under Windows AND it works from a USB port (with the appropriate IDE->USB adaptor) under Linux (but is SLOW....). Interestingly enough, it did NOT work under USB with SuSE 9.3 Pro, but it DOES work with 10.0. So, I'm pretty sure it's some sort of a Linux issue. My next step will be to go back to a 9.2 machine I have here and plug it in there; but that's pretty involved because of where the two machines are located. Good enough...

You didn't mention that in your original post. Obviously, there is a driver or compatability problem with the later Linux version.
but, the drive works under Windows AND it works from a USB port (with the appropriate IDE->USB adaptor) under Linux (but is SLOW....).
So hardware problems are definitely ruled out.

If it solves the immediate problem, making backups, then it's a good thing you've got a 9.2 box to fall back on. But I'll bet you can get this properly fixed (or find the existing fix) if you keep the topic active here (maybe file a bug report?) SLE a great list... Good luck! - Carl

What are you referring to with the word "it" as in "it returns..."? Also, can you be more specific than "a bunch of errors"? You've quoted one, from BackupEdge... what are the others? (copy/paste if possible.) And where do you see that "bunch"? Console? Shell? GUI? What do you do (specific commands) that causes them to appear? Are these errors identical or are there differences between tar and BackupEdge? You're logged in as 'root' or as yourself (normal user) when these errors happen? (IOW, you've ruled out permissions problems, right?) - Carl
Hi, Carl (et al) - found my problem. I started using TAR to write ASCII files and read 'em back, and discovered that I was getting single bit errors (characters changed, that sort of thing). So,I decided to check the IDE controller parameters on the 9.2 and 10.0 systems. On 9.2, the controller defaulted to UDMA33. On 10.0, it's defaulting to UDMA100. When I backed it off to UDMA66, the problem(s) went away. Just a simple data overrun problem (but a really bugger to diagnose). Clay ------- On Dec 16, 2005, at 11:30 PM, Carl Hartung wrote:

Hi Clay, Glad to hear you've solved your problem, but as usual this explanation opens up a bunch of new questions and concerns, chief among them being the system apparently not being smart enough to fall back when these kinds of errors were being encountered. What's up with /that?/ regards, - Carl

Slow here on SUSE 10 as well. I just mount it and copy to it. Quite slow. On the Linux REV site (http://iomrrdtools.sourceforge.net/#tools), there is a curious statement in the "Known Issues" section: 3. Write performance is very slow with some applications. Most notibly cp, dd, and most GUI tools (such as Konqueror and Nautilus). Tests indicate that the drive can obtain good performance on Linux with specialized applications so the problem is not in the UDF filesystem per-se. I have yet to determine what the "specialized applications" are. I want to use this with tar from a custom backup script that understands a certain data layout. But with the REV, transfer is soooo slow. This site has info on various SUSE releases and the REV, but not SUSE 10. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems AB
I didn't really bother to look at the transfer times when I was using it under USB, as that's not really where I wanted to be - but, once I got it back up and running with the IDE interface, I was getting 24+Gb/hour transfer speeds on the write and 30+Gb/hour on the reads, according to BackupEdge - that's plenty acceptable for me as a backup device.
