Login without prompting for a password?
Is it possible to add a user so that when they login it doesn't prompt them for a password. Right now we have a limited user account that calls a menu program, and then kicks them out when they exit the menu, we have the user setup with a blank password right now but it still prompts for a password, and you just hit enter to login, but it would be even better if you could just type in the username and it would log you in. We used to be able to do this on UnixWare, right now we are in the middle of switching from UnixWare to SuSE on our servers and this is one of the little things that is bugging us yet... Rob

Yes, you can do this in both KDE or GNOME. For KDE, open the Control Center, look in System Administration - Login Manager. For GNOME, run 'gdmsetup'. Chris

I tried using control center and enabled passwordless login's for the user in question but when I try to login in a shell it still prompts me for the password, does that only have an effect on logging into kde?I guess I should have specified that this is only through a telnet or ssh session. Rob

Yes, it only applies to KDE. Does this doc help any? http://www.hackinglinuxexposed.com/articles/20021211.html Chris

...forgot to link part 2 of the article... http://www.hackinglinuxexposed.com/articles/20021226.html --------------------------------------------------------------- Well sorta it does, but we have some devices we have are psc falcons that run dos and just have a telnet client on them, and that's the one's that we are worried about being able to login by scanning one barcode. You can use public keys through ssh.... This way you will not be asked for a password... Daniel Rob Sell wrote: the user
