I have a 1650 scanner and I managed to set it up and get it working after a few trial and tribulations. 1. YAST2 to set up a scanner of type generic/epson. At this point (if I did not reboot) xsane worked fine recognising a scanner. When I rebooted xsane could no longer "see" the scanner. 2. YAST2 RC-Config Editor, Base-Administration/Common-Basics/initrd_modules add modules "usbcore uhci scanner". But beware that some usb interfaces require the usb-uhci module and if you have a usb printer you should add the "printer" module. Look at the SuSE support database for USB articles to see what your system requires. 3. Fix the changes with the "mk_initrd" command executed as root. If you are using lilo then you must also run the "lilo" command as root. After all this my system has run with both the 1650 and an Epson photo 895 and also a Sony camera connected by the usb.
