Is anyone using an HP JetDirect print server with Suse? If so, do you know what I need to do to install or hook up to it? Tom
Yep. I have a few SuSE 8 machines at work happily printing at 600x600 to an HP LJ5 which is itself hooked up to an internal JetDirect. I don't remember the procedure exactly, but I know it took all of 5mins to set it up from Yast2. You may not know this, but you can also download JetAdmin for Linux from the HP website, and that works quite well, too, although a lot of it is Java based so Konqueror doesn't work so well with it. I know this post is pretty light on specifics, but the process is basically fire up Yast2, add the printer as a network printer (lpr), pick the driver and do a test page. It does work. Bye for now, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: Tom Nielsen [mailto:tom@neuro-logic.com] Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 22:39 To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: [SLE] Jetdirect Is anyone using an HP JetDirect print server with Suse? I am using CUPS and I set up access to a JetDirect using YaST2. The process is similar 7.3 and 8.0. I don't remember if it was the same with versions less than 7.3. Also, I've only used JetDirects that were configured for TCP/IP. Not sure how well it works if the JetDirect is only configured for IPX. In YaST2: Hardware / Edit Printers / Add / Jet Direct Network Printer / enter the IP address of the JetDirect, fill out the rest of the details and test. That's almost what worked for me. Then I read Robert Paulson's post a couple of weeks ago: I have an HP LaserJet network printer and was able to set up access to it via Yast2 on both SuSE 7.3 and SuSE 8.0, so it can be done. One thing you say that confuses me is that you have multiple printers on the same IP address. I am not sure how this can be possible (but since I only have one printer myself perhaps I just don't know what the implications are). Perhaps each is on a different queue name? Note that Yast2 does not autodetect network printers. To set up a network printer, try the following: 1. Start the Yast2 Hardware module and select "Edit Printers" 2. Click on the Add button. 3. Choose "Prefilter for an LPD forwarding queue" and click Next 4. Choose "Create a new one" and click on Loookup. If this finds an IP address, good. Otherwise type in the correct ip address for the printer(s?). 5. In my case, it makes no difference what I use for "Name of remote queue", but perhaps in your case it will make a difference. 6. Click on Next and select the manufacturer, model, driver, etc.. The above will create both a "Forwarding queue" and a "Prefilter queue". Use the "Prefilter queue" as the queue name to print to. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. That worked for me. Hope it does for you! Nick

They can use the same IP address and use a different port for each printer. For example, 192.168.x.y:9100 is the default for printer #1, :9101 for printer #2, etc. -ronc -- 10:24am up 2 days, 13:12, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.00
He is not talking about a jet direct card in an HP printer but one of them print server devices that let you put a printer on a network, you hook network cable to the box an then a printer cable to the printer server, they come in one port an 3 port types. I have not use the HP version of this device but have used a linksys print server for a while. you just asign it an ip address an then put a printer onto it an then use yast2 printer setup to set it up. very easy.
Yes, I am, I simply set it up with the "Printers in CUPS" component of YaST2...
