Need to make Windows & SUSE install files, InstallAnywhere?
I have a Windows software product that will eventually be ported to SUSE Linux. My understanding is that this is not be as simple as making an RPM. Are SUSE RPM's essentially ZIP files? Or do they have logic for things like creating users, running scripts, configuring services, etc? So I need a system for creating Windows MSI install files, and something to create an install package for (initially) SUSE Linux. Does anyone have any experience with Macrovision's InstallAnywhere product? Here: http://www.macrovision.com/products/flexnet_installshield/installanywhere/fe... - it says it supports "SUSE". Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I recently installed JAlbum that the InstallAnywhere product for the install. Worked quite well actually. I possible problem with it is there is no dependency checking I am aware of. YMMV -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

To the best of my knowledge, RPMs don't have any logic, but they have a list of _required_ RPMs. (which you should obey, but can override)

I never heard of such "multi-platform" installer. I don't know how this is possible ! Can you tell me how a single installer can be cross-platform ? -Alexey, 18.2.2006.

Hi Alexey I was surprised the first time I saw this, but it's done in Java. regards, Carl

rpms have pre- and post-install scripts, and pre- and post-uninstall scripts. These are shell scripts that get run before and after install and uninstall respectively. So you can have lots of logic in an rpm
ok, that is good to know, thanks!
