Hi all, I have an xp machine called fbath4 that I would like to join the domain on my samba 2.2.3 PDC. I created the machine account with useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "New computer" -s /bin/false fbath4$ then passwd -l fbath4$ then smbpasswd -a -m fbath4 I verified the entries exist in /etc/passwd & /etc/samba/smbpasswd I tried the "on the fly" technique from the howto also and it didn't work. When I try to join a domain I get "Windows cannot find an account for your computer on the fb domain." Then it asks for a username I put mine and I get Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred. "Winodws cannot find the network path. Verify that the network path is correct and the destination computer is not busy or turned off... Is there an issue between XP and samba? Any help would be appericiated. John --
Hi,
JS> useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "New computer" -s /bin/false fbath4$
JS> then
JS> passwd -l fbath4$
why the passwd -l?
my experience is that the account needs to be active
- but of course no one should be able to login with it..
so try it instead with a passwd -u to activate the user, or manually
change the "!" in the shadow to a "*".
JS> Is there an issue between XP and samba? Any help would be appericiated.
I`d more details, attach your smb.conf.

Bye.

Okay, I tried your suggestion and the problem changed. It now says "Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error occurred: The network path was not found." Any other suggestions? John

Is it listed in /etc/samba/lmhosts? If not, add it. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. I say, by the grace of God, I am what I am.

It's there. I keep getting the same error though. -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Experience the convenience of buying online with Shop@Netscape! http://shopnow.netscape.com/

I'm not running local dns. All hosts are added to /etc/hosts and each hosts & hosts.sam file on each machine. Now I checked the samba logs and I'm seeing repeating messages like this: lib/access.c:check_access(325) denied connection from (192.168.11.2) this refers to the ip of one of my xp boxes. Any clue on this error? I've got hosts.allow = 192.168.11 - I had: hosts deny = ALL except 127.0.0.1, but I deleted that to eliminate it as the culprit John

Is XP running a firewall on its NIC?
Yes, it's running zone alarm.

Try stopping Zone Alarm and see if it works. It is probably blocking ports 137-139 (and should if this was pointing to the internet) and not allowing SMB to work. If it is the free version, you do not have much ability to control it's settings. You need 137, 138 UDP and 139 TCP open. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Web Address: http://www.mydestiny.net/~joe_morris Registered Linux user 231871 God said, I AM that I AM. Okay Joe, I tried that. Same error. Could this be an internal setting to XP? Also, are you sure that error means something is bad on the client side? So far I haven't been able to find anything that indicates what that error means.

Did you tick "enable Netbios over TCP/IP" on your XP machine? (properties Local Area connection > properties TCP/IP > Advanced > WINS tab) Marcel

Okay, I fixed this problem. Now I can join the domain using the Computer Name tab in System Properties. I can access the shares on the Samba PDC and get a list of users when adding permissions for shares on the XP boxes. That all works good. The only thing that still doesn't work is the logon screen. If I select the PDC's domain name in the Domain box instead of leaving the computer's name there, it errors out saying 'either the domain name cannot be found or no account could be found for this computer'. Does anyone know if this functionality has been implemented yet? Does anyone actually have XP/2000 boxes making trust connections with a samba pdc? John
