Have you checked xorg.conf?

Try commenting out the radeon section. Or better yet comment out the small fglrx entry and then replace the entry where radeon is listed with fglrx. If your still having problems getting fglrx running then run "/usr/sbin/atigetsysteminfo.sh" and it will detail what's missing. I had a problem with fglrx_dri.so not being in the right place and was going nuts trying to figure out why no hardware 3D - then ran the atigetsysteminfo command, it found out what was missing - the fglrx_dri.so file was indeed in the system but not in the place it was expected to be at - so I simply compied the file to the approp directory and voila - 3D.
