[opensuse] Processes are slow on opensuse 11.3
Hi, I have a machine set up with opensuse 11.3. The uptime is now 10 days but I see that nearly all computing processes are slow. For example one process that uses no I/O and does not wait but heavily computes on some data already read in only consumes 2% of the cpus. Did anyone see similar problems? If one of those processes is Firefox, check with top. You'll likely find that (plugin-handler?) is consuming 100+% cpu, and just killing it instantly speeds up everything else, including Firefox. i'm running 11.3 x86_64(kde) with only 3gb ram. and i experienced what you are saying at first but now it's all smooth. in my opinion it's unlikely that it's cpu related it's the memory-hog applications that are slowing it down. in my case gconfd and tracker-miner(and the whole tracker related processes) that were a big issue. i just removed ~/.gconfd and uninstalled tracker and that was solved. also i was using opera which quickly turned into a big memory hog of it's own(easily consumes over 400Mb) but now i'm using firefox4 beta from the trunk and it's quite smooth rarely does it get over 300Mb. i suggest you see which applications are consuming a lot of memory and also think of upgrading your kernel to 2.6.36 if you haven't done so already. also i shouldn't go without noting that plasma-desktop consumes a lot of memory if left running for a few days but it's quite ok for the first day or two. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Here on 11.2 it's plugin-containe, which seems more often to consume more RAM than CPU. of course, running flash instances will be killed & the space they occupied on the page empty. but often the plugin wrapper doesn't close properly, even after the browser tab is closed. as michael getachew already said, i've seen this behavior a while ago, but not recently. which versions of FF, nsplugin & flash are you running? -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

32 bit 3.6.12-1.2, 1.2.2-5.7.1, 10.1.102.64-0.2.1, though this multimedia stuff has new updates available almost daily and I don't do those until I'm in the mood to exit X to do it, which usually means it happens less often than weekly. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." To me "just restarting Firefox" is no small thing. I keep a lot of tabs open, most of which seem to prevent browser caching, so it takes a while to complete a restart. Restart also takes extra time for bookmarks to be imported from the profile where I manage them ever since the switch from bookmarks.html to places.sqlite that stupidly merged bookmarks and history into a single sluggish and bloated database. If it was up to me, Flash wouldn't even exist, but unfortunately due to proliferation of moronic web designers, some crucial content cannot be accessed without it. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi, here is the output of top sorted by memory consumption. All the chipbench processes are cpu-bound. I've checked with iotop. The machine is constantly swapping. I see no reason to do this. There are 160 GB in the caches that could be dropped. How can I force the machine to drop the caches and use the memory for processes again. I think here is a bug that does not do this automatically. Your chipbench processes seem to be mostly sleeping (S) or waiting for IO (D) - have you looked at what they are waiting for? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (4.0°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I haven't investigated it yet, but I recently rebuilt my firewall with 11.3 and found the performance is very poor. When I run a bandwidth test, it can't even manage 5 Mb/s. When it was running 11.0, my firewall had no problem reaching 10 Mb/s. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
