Ok, so the additional install images are gone, so can I compile a kernel on another system, then put it on a bootfloppy and use that to install 8.1? With default kernel I get "compiled for Pentium+, requires CMPXCHG8B feature" ...so can I just compile it with the CMPXCHG8B (whatever that is) and any other non Pentium options? Or, is there anyway to force this puppy to install on an older AMD? Thanks, Jeric

To put it shortly, no. AMD K5 133 is a 486 clone, while everything in 8.1 is compiled for 586. So recompiling just a kernel is not enough. You have to recompile everything, but then it won't be SuSE Linux 8.1

The oldest AMD it will work on is AMD K6. Regards, -Kastus

CMPXCHG8B (whatever that is)
CMPXCHG8B (compare and exchange eight bytes) is a machine language instruction introduced with the original Pentium. For a detailed description , see http://www.clipx.net/ng/iapx86/ng92b9.php. Philipp -- Philipp Thomas work: pthomas@suse.de Development SuSE Linux AG private: pth@t-link.de
