I found this from a Google search: edit (as root) the file: /opt/kde3/bin/startkde. There seems to be an error on line 242: LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit The line should be split into two lines like this: LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit Apparently the knotify program wasn't getting started when KDE starts up. This fixed the problem for me. Hope this will help others. Rodney

It sure did, restored my system notifications without having to rebuild the artsd package. Thanks Rodney for digging this up! Michael

If you dig back into the archives a bit, you'll find that solution had already been brought up (by me) and shot down. What you're doing there is, in effect, rendering the LD_BIND value inoperative, which isn't so much a fix, as a workaround that could lead to further problems. I rebuilt the arts packages, installed them and the system sounds returned. So, I've been loosely following this thread (yes, with some amusement) and finally decided to take a look at *my* /opt/kde3/bin/kdestart file and, guess what? I have this on Line 335: "LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit +knotify" Compare to your Line 242: "LD_BIND_NOW=true kdeinit +kcminit" Am I misinterpreting something here? Is your Line 242 also supposed to have a "+knotify" there? regards, - Carl -- _______________________________________________________________________ C. E.
