I know there have been several posts lately regarding Xfree86-4.01, but I wasn't planning on upgrading so I didn't pay too close attention. However, I just bought the game Terminus and found out that in order for my RIVA TNT to work, I need "Xfree86-4.0 or higher". I went back and re-read some of the earlier posts, and I am a little confused about which is the best way to go. (I'm currently running 6.4 w/ 3.3.6). 1. If I remember correctly the Xfree version 4.0 on the 6.4 CDs does not work correctly....? 2. There seems to have been mixed success using the update from the SuSE ftp site. (Some folks had no probs - others had lots...) 3. Using 4.01 from xfree.org works, but there seems to have been a lot of problems involved in getting it to work. Could someone who has been successful in upgrading to 4.0 from 3.3.6 please post a detailed recap of the steps they took to get it all working correctly (especially if you have a nvidia card :-) . I would very much appreciate this! Thanks! rather than steal other peoples thunder, I would again refer anybody to this:- http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/00q3/000811/index.html it gives a very detailed step by step approach. as far as tips etc, I would go for 4.0.1 as it seems to be better supported with respect to NVidia, I would also recommend the tar files rather than the rpm's (also I believe ther is no rpm for 4.0.1 ?) you can then put them in a seperate directory and run everything from there. have a look at the xfree86.org pages, there is a couple of install pages that are very useful, particularly install2.html I believe which gives you the mandatory files required. A further visit to nvidia.com to pick up the 4.0.1kernel and 4.0.1opengl files and after following the instructions away you go. beforehand please make a backup of /etc and /usr/X11R6, that way you can rescue any foulups that may occur. expect root not to be able to log in to a file manager, copy an .xsession file across from another user and finally as has been pointed out, kdm, if you use it, has a crappy background ! a bit rambling I'm afraid - perhaps someone can be more succinct ? BTW what is Terminus ? pete On Thu, 24 Aug 2000, you wrote:

1. I had 6.2 running with XFree86 4.0, and just upgraded to 6.4 and installed the latest XFree86 4.0 rpms. Rather than updating I removed XFree86 3.3.6, and then installed 4.0. You will get some complaints about conflicting files, so just check what they are and if they really are conflicts. 2. Use sax2 to choose and configure your video card and monitor. 3. Download the NVidia drivers. There are two tarballs, one for the kernel and one for GLX. Do the kernel first. The makefile should not need to be adjusted, just type make and then ./install.sh. Type 'lsmod' and you should see NVdriver in your module list. The GLX part can be tricky, but I have done it twice now so I think I have encountered nearly all the problems. First type 'locate libGL.so' and see if there are other versions of this library around. If so move them out of the way. Type 'locate libglx.' and if any exists then move them out of the way (may be libglx.a, and libglx.so). Now type make in GLX directory to install the files in all of required locations. 4. Add the glx module to /etc/X11/Xf86Config Section "Module" ... Load "glx" EndSection Next change driver to NVidia driver, your will of course say TNT. Section "Device" BoardName "GEFORCE256" BusID "1:5:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "Nvidia" EndSection 5. There is a log stored in /var/log/XFree86-* everytime you start the X server. This is gret source of information. You can also type 'startx > startx.log 2>&1' to create your own log. I think this should get you started.
Thanks!
