Re: [opensuse] HOW TO ENABLE A USER TO DOWNLOAD A HUGE FILE FROM MY LAPTOP
I did not mean to shout. I just had the caps lock key on ... by chance.
Well, the user tryed to download the big file through ftp.
That's what he said. But the connection was immediately closed by the host that I think is my laptop (where the big file resides). I do not know how to enable him to use ftp or ssh or any other protocol you may advice.
He has all acces rights to the project directory.
Thanks for your help,
Maura

I created a login for a member of the project group on my laptop running SuSE 11.1 I gave him full access to my /home directory that contains the project directory.
Using which protocol?
It is not possible to give a correct answer unless you specify which protocol is he going to use to extract the file.
So I'll assume you are going to use ssh and scp, correct? There is no size limit I know of. Look up into your logs.

All access rights how? Does he have a local account on your computer? Have you shared the directory using a certain protocol? Is there a firewall between the two systems? Are they on the same network? What OS does he run? Which client is he using? What exactly is the error message? Are you able to ping him and vice versa? There are too many variables in this equation to be able to produce any sort of answer. Please provide more information. Yes. He has
Have you shared the directory using a certain protocol?
I do not know how to do that. I just created an account for him and gave him full access rights to my /home directory using chmod.
Is there a firewall between the two systems?
I did not set up any firewall. Maybe SuSE does that by default ?
Are they on the same network? Yes. The university network.
What OS does he run? He can run either Linux/Ubuntu or Windows. When he attempted to access my computer I assume he was running Linux (his favourite OS)
Which client is he using? He said he succeeded in connecting to my system through the IP address. The ftp session opened up but was losed by the host (that is my computer)
What exactly is the error message? I do not know the exact error message. It is basically what I reported above. My computer rejected the ftp connection he started.
Are you able to ping him and vice versa? Well, he could log in his account on my computer. I did not try to ping his machine. I will

I hope I have clarified some doubts. Preumably I have to enable certain mechanisms, throught Yast, which I took for granted as enabled already. Thak you, Maura

Then you have to use ssh/scp.

You are on a university network and have no firewall... You /must/ love hackers a lot, do you? >>:-)

Then he should know about ssh.

Because you have no server configured.
What exactly is the error message? I do not know the exact error message. It is basically what I reported above. My computer rejected the ftp connection he started.

Remotely? Then ssh is running. Just tell him to use that. It is setup, you do not have to do anything more. (fish:// in konqueror)
I did not try to ping his machine. I will

When it works. If it doesn't, then try sftp:// protocol. See here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=189235 -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, the user tryed to download the big file through ftp.
Did you tell him to use ftp? I suppose you configured the ftp server?
That's what he said. But the connection was immediately closed by the host that I think is my laptop (where the big file resides). I do not know how to enable him to use ftp or ssh or any other protocol you may advice.
He has all acces rights to the project directory.
All access rights... by which protocol exactly? What did you do exactly to give those access rights? You do not provide sufficient info. If you give someone access to your computer, you do that using something. You intend them to use certain protocol, for which you have previously enabled and configured the appropiate daemon and firewallports, and entered the user password/name in the appropiate configuration file for that protocol. Where did you enter that password? For what protocol? Samba? Ftp? ssh/scp? http? Nfs? Unless you clarify, there is no way for us to guess an answer. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
