I have been searching for a how-to and the above matter, but have not found anything applicable to what I want to do. I have a netgear router-firewall-DHCP. I am presently using this DHCP with the 3 computers I have on my network. I want to add a server which would have DNS server so I can locate the machines by name on the network. I have found info where the server is both DNS and DHCP server, but nothing for the DNS Server getting info from an external DHCP server for the DNS. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this or where there is info on this? Art

It's not possible. The DNS server cannot derive the host info from the DHCP server -- unless the DHCP server does DDNS (dynamical DNS) to update the DNS server's zone data. Of course the DHCP server can serve data to hosts that are known in some DNS server, without knowing the data itself. (The DHCP server could hand out the IP address to the client, accompanied by the IP address of the DNS server and other data, and the client could look up its own hostname on its own.) Peter

Probably the best way to do what you want is to program your DHCP server with the IP address of one of your internal servers to act as nameserver for your local network. o Set up a local zone for your private network o Make the server recursive and point it the ISP's name servers o Make the server do forwarding first and again, it's now pointed up... Now you have local DNS lookups with the added feature of your local network having its own, private little zone file. The other way to do this would be simpler, but not as cool... manually maintain the IPs for your local net in /etc/hosts. -- Brad Shelton On Line Exchange http://www.ole.net Phone: 313-526-1111 Fax: 313-526-3333
