[opensuse] 10.3 - Compiz -- Lost emerald .. again after updates
List, Ben What gives with emerald? I had been rocking along with a 10.3 box with compiz & my emerald themes with no problems for quite some time. Then after an update, *poof* no more emerald. So I did the normal and usual: sudo rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep compiz) $(rpm -qa | grep ccsm) fusion-icon Then proceeded to the X11:/XGL repository and reloaded compiz for my kde3 install like I have done many times before. Started compiz - and still _no windows decorations_ at all. Huh? Ok, select 'kde window decoration' and reload the desktop and _still no window decorations_ at all. kwin --replace & start it manually with: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering --no-libgl-fallback ccp & Compiz is working brilliantly but _still no window decorations_ at all. Ok, start emerald manually with emerald --replace & and look for clues. compiz (core) - Warn: No GLXFBConfig for depth 32 Doesn't look terribly impressive, compare compiz install with other box. Other box has compiz-emerald-themes-0.6.0-1.1, and this box has,.. WTF?? no compiz-emerald-themes _at all_. How did I miss installing that. Back to the X11:XGL repo, .... looking, WTF? Where the hell did the compiz-emerald-themes go? It's nowhere to be found. OK -- Who forgot to put the emerald themes back in the X11:/XGL directory? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Seriously Guys, It's not just emerald gone with compiz running, it's all window decorations, kde or otherwise. What can I check to start digging into this problem. I am using the nvidia driver that has always worked great before with compiz. The card is a 7800GS. I can't figure out how to get _any_ window decorations back. Ideas? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. I have not been able to get Emerald working in OpenSUSE 11.1 at all. No amount of fiddling with packages has resolved the issue. I am not alone. Every one of my co-workers who has installed 11.1 has also not been able to get Emerald working at all. Add to that the instability of Compiz and it's become almost comical. Just about anything upsets the "balance" and makes Compiz stop working. We've gotten used to forgoing "upgrades" because those "upgrades" damage the balance. Even when Compiz is working, almost anything will cause it to fail. Simply running Skype and then closing it will cause the screen to flash, after that, Compiz doesn't work. Again, I am not alone. We all have a variety of machines and a variety of video cards and this is an ongoing problem. Compiz works if you don't do ANYTHING after you get it working. Emerald never has.

Todd, thanks, I've been there. See one of my favorite screenshots from beta testing: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/openSUSE_11.1/compizcrash-blackcube.jpg Think about what happens when you let go of th ctrl+alt keys..... Your problem with emerald on 11.1 is *NOMAD*. If have emerald working fine on 11.1, but you have to completely uninstall compiz: rpm -e $(rpm -qa | grep compiz) $(rpm -qa | grep ccsm) fusion-icon The *ONLY* install the compiz packages from (the nomad free zone): http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_11.1/ Then start compiz, select emerald and PRAY;-) Seriously, after the third or fourth reinstall of compiz on 11.1, my emerald themes (which I am very fond of having taken hours to create them) -- started working. I would yell and scream, but I understand the tough times and tough directional challenges J., Danny, Kristian, Dennis and Dave have been through over the last few months with compiz and I am encouraged by the recent structure that has been put in place by the team. So I know we have great things coming, I just wish the great things we have had would continue to work. Nomad is the nightmare. I understand that for distributed computing, it is a necessary evil, but the team must figure out how to implement it without killing emerald. My thoughts were always: [[ ! remote_connection ]] && compiz=normal_compiz_with_emerald My immediate problem here is *not only* that emerald isn't work but that *no decorations at all* are working with the same compiz packages I have run for 6 months. That is the _frustrating_ part. And, this is on *10.3* where *nothing* should be breaking anything anymore. For your 11.1 issue, try the dump and reinstall I mentioned above. Now with it working on my 11.1 install, I'm scared to death to update (a/k/a cripple) anything ;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. David...do you walk on water too? ;-) This totally solved my problems with Emerald and I now have themes working again. Thanks for the excellent advice.

Nope, I do the wine thing ;-) Glad it helped. I actually cranked up my 11.1 install to update and check the compiz version installed. Since you have it working, no need to post. That's the only place I have installed compiz from. If it hasn't, I stand corrected. Hey, what is this repository: download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-stable Is that the kde3 branch of openSUSE:? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
