Re: [SLE] Attention SuSE'ers: New Distro Suggestions laid out, waddaya think? (was: [SLE] SuSE Needs a "Guru Edition"!)
No, I think that is the best or are you one of those who do the full
install??? With ftp access you can pick and choose what you like, get sooner
access and more reliable updates as you working closer together with SuSE
and are not bugged by any of the stuff you may not want. I see ftp access as
more efficient in terms of use and more reliable and secure updates. Some
might even propose developing a ftp-update-tool which automatically updates
your box without your knowledge. =)

Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 11:41:12 -0400 The problem with ftp-only distribution is that it's entirely impractical to pick up 3GB worth of material over a connection that's much less than a T1 line.

Purple Shirt, I think it's a fine suggestion (FTP Distributions), however since the clear majority of people do still have low-band connections, it just isn't really a reality yet (however, since it would take little effort on SuSE's part to do this - maybe they should offer it anyway). Isn't your suggestion sort of like RedHat Network? What about this: PowerPack $25 Packaged/$10 Priority FTP Professional $39 Packaged/$20 Priority FTP (60-days support) Linux Starter Kit $69 Packaged/$40 Priority FTP (Large drop because of lack of manuals, inc. 90-days support Professional Library Edition $99 Packaged/ Not Available on FTP -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Gruezi, all.
If you look at what you have to pay RedHat to get priority ftp, I
don't think the prices being suggested are realistic. Well, perhaps the $40
fee, every 6 months or so. Ftp bandwidth is not cheap for SuSE,
either, nevermind all the basic costs of manpower etc. that will not
go away.
I think there is a certain value to having only a few products. Too
many products can confuse new customers and create customer ill-will
(we've seen it already). I know that diversifying product lines is
one way to increase total consumption, but that works in more
saturated markets. In this case I don't think it's the way to go.
Many people have commented on how they liked the fact that there used
to be just one SuSE. SuSE was SuSE and that was it. I myself don't
much care for marketing-driven product proliferation because at the
root of all marketing is sham and insincerity. But hey, that's beside
the point. There remains exactly one issue we all agree on --
upgrade editions have to be better priced. I think this is possible
through grandfathering an original full-price registration in a
subscription service. But this is only so much wind, a priori -- or
is it a posteriori -- because fundamentally SuSE has to price taking
into consideration its costs. And since we don't know what exactly
those are, this is all kind of moot. We do know that if SuSE gives its
work out for free, soon there will be no SuSE. That's a pretty simple
calculation.

This is the crux of the whole matter!
Personally, I don't give a rats' bum about how they work out the price.
If I think it's reasonable, I'll pay it. How many of you were telling
all your friends (a few months ago), what a great bargain SuSE was, with
all the apps and utilities it came with? Well, the fire-sale season is
over. :-(
To me, it is still a bloody good investment (but I'll wait for 7.1
Professional, been burnt too many times with "x.0" releases).
