[opensuse] virtualisation and dual core
Hello can I state than any dual core provessor can do full virtualisation? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

no. not if you mean hardware-virtualization-technologies. there are pentium dual-cores for example, which are, of course dual core processors, but don't have hardware-virtualization-technologies. -- einen schönen Tag noch, & bitte kein TOFU (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOFU) DI Rainer Klier Abteilung IT - Entwicklung ECOLOG Logistiksysteme GmbH Bauernstraße 11, A-4600 Wels Tel. ++43/7242/66200 Fax ++43/7242/66200-200 mailto:kra@ecolog.at http://www.ecolog.at Fb-Nummer 171431f Landesgericht Wels A member of TGW LOGISTICS GROUP -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Also, it requires BIOS support as I understand it. I have a 6-month old Dell with Intel Dual Core. I think the cpu has VT support, but the bios does not, so no VT here. (I installed vmware server (xp) on it last Friday. So far that is looking good, but I'm just getting the most recent M$ updates. Can't speak to performance yet, but it does feel slow.) Yes, I recently set up a VM server (FSC Primergy RX300S3 with 12 GB RAM and 2 Quad Core CPUs 1.6 Ghz. At the moment I've got 7 VMs running (most rather low usage), and overall the CPU utilisation is staying in the low one digit range. The BIOS had a setting for the virtualisation functions (disabled by default) called Vanderpool-something which I enabled. At the moment it looks as if I will run out of RAM much sooner than get into any trouble because of CPU/hdd usage. Though the server is running under Windows 2003 64bit. -- Sandy List replies only please! hell! how can one know if the processor is able to do this (in fact use Xen fully) thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think it will have svm or vmx in /proc/cpuinfo. grep -E 'svm|vmx' /proc/cpuinfo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

well... I would know *before* buying it :-() jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I would ask the vendor to see if their bios reflects the technology, as the processor is independent of the motherboard, as per the processor, you can always call or email the vendor support as well Jose jdd wrote:

I will try, the problem is that in advertisements little vendors gives the exact processor reference, so my question. I will be obliged to track the thing down precisely :-( thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Afair, only the dual-core with numbers higher than 6000 have the VT-extensions, I'm not sure about the quad-core or Xeons.... Hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, those with pacifica-extensions. But i never had the chance to play with those. So can't say anything about it HW -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
