[opensuse] DMA -- control over in YaST Control Centre
In version 10.3, in YaST Control Centre in the Hardware section there was an entry called "DMA" (or some-such) which gave you the DMA used by the discs and the CDROM and DVD burner. You could also change the DMA for each device. In version 11.0 this option has disappeared - or has it been hidden somewhere else? Anyone know where it is now? I am now testing Beta4 of 11.1 and find that any DVD I try to play skips and stutters just like it did back in 10.3 if the DMA (of the CDROM) was not correctly set. My notes show me how to force the correct DMA in etc/sysconfig/ide but I cannot remember what the command line statement is which will display what DMA is being used by each of the devices. Could someone please refresh my memory? Thanks, Patrick. I looked in man hdparm but got absolutely lost in all the 'waffle' -- most of the man pages could do with some simple examples on how to do things rather than go on and on listing available options :-) . The question now remains is why isn't the DMA set correctly in 11.1 Beta4 for the CDROM -- and why, just like in 11.0, there is no option to view and set the DMA in the Control Centre? Further to the above, I thought there is a command line which will actually show what the DMA of a device is. hdparm as used above only shows if the DMA is set (1) or not set (0). Ignore the above comment about the DMA not being set correctly in 11.1 Beta4 because rebooting the system has set the DMA to 1 (ON) [for all devices]. However, the question as to why the DMA option not being in Control Centre stands. Ciao.
Since 11.0 the dma setting in your bios is honoured. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Any reference? I would really like to read more about that, as I had devices that disliked high speed very much. -- Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No just from personal experience what is set in bios is what the kernel uses. If you have a problem with a udma value not working you have to use the bios to change it. I can't speak for older computers without udma settings in bios, I've just tried hdparm -d /dev/sr0 and I get HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device but fortunately I don't have a problem.
