[opensuse] Scanner recommendation? Epson 4490 any good?
My old HP-5470 scanner has bit the dust, and I'm looking for a good quality scanner that will not give me problems with Linux drivers. I've been looking at the Epson Perfection 4490 Colour Flatbed Scanner, and I wonder if anyone here has any experience with one. -- bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Most HO devices work great. I have brand new OfficeJet 5610 printer/scanner - excellent machine with superb Linux support. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I take it that's a typo for "HP," that is, Hewlett Packard? Or are you referring to model trains? RRS -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
look here: http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Scanners#Hewlett-Packard HP OfficeJet 5610 is a very powerful device configured within seconds. That's compared to my previous scanner, UMAX Astra 3600 that doesn't work in linux at all - thats a day-and-night difference ! ! -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well ok, but didn't the OP ask for a Flatbed Scanner while you are using an All_in_One printer/fax/scanner device. I do noit doubt the excellence of your all in one (I am using such a thing myself). However imho it will never have the scan-qualities of a specialized scanner. regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, Alexey, but due to my last two experiences with HP scanner/printers, and HPLIP driver, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. I also have a new HP scanner that's been out for six months and still doesn't have an HP linux driver. It's an HP 2340 that you have to use the HP 3900 driver on, and it puts a pinkish cast over the whole scan. I want a very capable scanner for some photographic work, including negative scans, and the typical all in ones have quite poor resolution. -- bob@rsmits.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Say WHAT? Hplip works perfectly. Your experiences must have been long long ago and far far away. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I have an HP PSC 2210 all-in-one attached to my wife's Windows Xp
system. I rarely need to scan, but currently, I let it scan to Windows,
and then access the file via Samba. Is there a way I can configure SANE
to access the scanner through Windows.
(Note, my next purchase will be a networked all-in-one).

Basically you're asking for sharing scanner...hmmm... I don't know any specialized software for that task, not on Windows and not on Linux. However if scanner is connected to Linux, you can access to it from NX to scan then SMB to move files around. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The HP Photosmart3310 has a built in web-server which can be used for scanning. You can also set up a shared samba folder in which all scans are being automatically sent to when you only use the buttons directly on the printer/scanner (called HP share).
I believe most of the 'printer/copier/scanner/network/media hub' printers are like this. Thanks Morten, I'll consider this the next time I make a purchase.

Very good idea. Mine is networked and I prints/copies/scans greatly, from both Win and Lin. Lin works perfect thanks to HPlip. You could see whether it works with a hp jetdirect printserver. Instead of shelling out $$$ to find out, you could ask at the extremely helpful hplip mailinglist. regards Eberhard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
If you are going to choose either a scanner or printer I agree make sure its a real HP. You will always have Linux drivers Scott :-) Robert Smits wrote:

While I basically agree, please always make sure that you check the list of (hundreds of) supported devices at the hplip webpage BEFORE you buy!

Not always! Carefully check http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html in particular http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/unsupported.html It is crucial to have exact model names because small differences in model names can make big differences regarding support status. E.g. LaserJet 1018 and 1020 are not supported by newest HPLIP but LaserJet 1015 and 1022 are supported even by old HPLIP and Color LaserJet 2600 is not supported by newest HPLIP but Color LaserJet 2500 is supported even by old HPLIP and Color LaserJet 2605 is PostScript and doesn't require HPLIP at all. Similar with scanners: HP stand-alone scanners are not very well supported, see http://www.sane-project.org/cgi-bin/driver.pl?manu=hp in contrast to scanners in HP all-in-one devices, see http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/index.html Similar with network devices: Third-party printserver boxes usually support only simple unidirectional data transfer from the PC to the printer. Therefore plain printing usually works - but even for plain printing there is no guarantee, see for example https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217215 Usually nothing else (e.g. scanning, sending faxes) works with non-HP printserver boxes. Best network support can be expected when there is a HP built-in network card which matches exactly to the model i.e. where HP offers the model with a built-in network card out-of-the-box and when the technical data sheet of HP claims network support for Unix-like operating systems. See the info at HP: http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/combined.html 1): Network support indicates built-in ethernet and/or wireless networking. Alternatively, many devices may be operated on the network using an external JetDirect print server. Not all network configurations are supported. Please refer to the HPLIP FAQs for more information. http://hplip.sourceforge.net/faqs.html Question: What network print servers are supported? Answer: Currently we have only tested HP JetDirect devices with HPLIP. No other network print servers are supported. True, but it is lot better than some (however my experience of HPs windows drivers has always been a bit mixed, and the JetDirect network stuff in Windows tends to be a bit of a curates egg... ). While it is good to check, but there is also a bit of a problem with the hp support distributed in 10.2. The version distributed seems to be 1.6.9.x, the hp support is currently at 1.7.4.x. After upgrading to 10.2, I found when I came to need to use it, that the scanner support for my HP3300 was broken. Also YaST does not detect the 3300 as a scanner in any case (printing was fine). I found this a little odd as everything worked until the upgrade. Just spent a very entertaining Sunday sorting this out :-) Having downloaded and installed 1.7.4 with the HP installer the problem seems to be fixed , and I found the HP scanner and printer configuration tools a little more informative than YaST. The installation is not entirely smooth, one has to uninstall the SuSE version of the HP support manually as the HP installer fails to remove this via YaST and got badly hungup on the SuSE repositories (at least in my case). I think there is a case for configuring YaST to load the HPs tools if an HP printer/scanner is detected. Now all I have to do is make certain that YOU/YaST does not blow this away at a future date. For anyone experiencing problems with HP printers or scanners I would suggest installing the HP Linux drivers from the sourceforge site and not use the ones currently in the distribution... However, you do need to manually... a) Remove SuSE HP support (via YaST) b) Install python-devel as the installers interaction with YaST is a bit flakey... and also... c) There are some indications that it requires Postfix to be installed (I can think of someone that would please ;-) ) (BTW removing the HP drivers does not seem to change the CUPS queue configuration). Choose custom install rather than automatic when prompted.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
