RE:[SLE] SUSE 7 Deluxe - Why's everyone so cross?
Hi, Please read the following email I sent to my supplier of SuSE products to understand why I'm pissed off with the current product/pricing split. On 15-Aug-2000 Leonard Chan wrote:

I notice from this email you are not offering the SuSE 7.0 upgrade product. From my understanding the upgrade product is the same as the Professional Version minus some of the documentation and would retail at about the same price as the Personal vesion. This information I received via SuSE mailing list.
Yes, but unfortunately, we're unable to offer the upgrade product 'cause SuSE only wants to deal with end users for updates :-( If you buy the upgrade from them, you will have to pay high shipping costs and that will be more expensive than buying the Prof version!
Feel free to complain to them. We have quite a number of customers in the same boat. They might change their mind if a lot of people complain?
Could you please advise me if this Upgrade product is available. The Personal version is not suitable for my usage and I will not be purchasing the Professional Version given the price hike.
Sure, understood.

I wonder if anyone from SuSE would like to reply to this regarding the policy of not letting retailers supply the upgrade product and forcing us users to buy the Professional Version because it will be cheaper than upgrading. This is a difficult one....and circumstances are different depending on your geographical location. I live in the UK...where SuSE is recognised as a market leader In previous versions....there was no doubt whatsoever....SuSE was the best value distribution available. Especially when you looked at the prices of the opposition. Due to the lack of information on the individual packages contained in 7 Personal and Professional...I had more or less decided to miss out this upgrade. However news of the subscription service appeared on the UK site on Monday, and I duly ordered my subscription. Even including the postage......it is marginally cheaper than the Personal Edition. In the UK...SuSE Professional is still much cheaper than the Red Hat equivalent, but Mandrake (standard and Delux), which has a very good reputation for new users, can now be obtained cheaper than the SuSE equivalents. Since SuSE UK has come on scene...it would appear that distributors have less opportunity to discount, as everyone appears to be selling at approx the same price. Perhaps the company has decided to price the product more realistically, and promote itself as quality...not quantity.... but care has to to be taken not to push people in another direction. I must second the complaint - if SuSE is going to raise the price, and use the excuse that there is the upgrade version, then it should be available in stores. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R.
