difference of upgrade with apt-get and synaptic
Hello! When using "apt-get -s upgrade" it tells me that it will not remove any package while doing a lot of upgrades. When doing the same operation using synaptic, it tells me it will install more and remove some. Why is there such a difference? Thanks! Patrick

because synaptic uses 'dist-upgrade' instead of simply 'upgrade'. Use dist-upgrade in your console and you will get the same. #apt-get dist-upgrade Guillermo - -- Guillermo Ballester Valor gbv@oxixares.com Ogijares, Granada SPAIN Linux user #117181. From your questions; it looks like that synaptic performs a dist-upgrade instead of a upgrade. The difference is that a upgrade does not go beyond a single that you have instead already. A dist-upgrade continues to resolve the pkg dependencies untill all dependencies are met. It does this by proposing to install additional pkg and/or to remove pkg. In case of the kde upgrade a dist-upgrade is better, after that for bug-fixes for example a upgrade is sufficient. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Sorry, it was my mistake, I first made a selection and then asked for an upgrade. The packages that had been selected for removal remained in that status. In fact, I mainly want to upgrade KDE. I then had selected kdebase thinking it was to be upgraded. In fact, when I ask for "upgrade", it only takes small parts of this package. Is it normal that it only needs a small part of this one (less than 1 MB)? Thank you for your help! Patrick
