I was installing win4lin today and noticed that my / filesystem was extreemly full (99%+). I had set up a partition to move /var to but hadn't gotten around to it yet. /var was still in its original position as part of the / (/dev/hdc8) file structure. The new location for /var was called /var2 (/dev/hdc10) I dropped down to init 1 # cd /var # tar cSpf - . | (cd /var2 ; tar xvSpf - ) I compared the directory sizes afterwords and they seemed to be the same. edited /etc fstab to mount /dev/hdc10 as /var #umount /var # mv /var /var.old #mv /var /var2 #reboot Although I now see things I might have done in a better way at the time things seemed fine, The system rebooted just fine and things seemed to be working. NOW the BAD, I was satisfied things were ok so I deleted my /var.old directory (I really needed the space). Later on I realized that I could no longer log on to my dial up connection as a user, only as root. The error kinternet gives is "Cannot open /dev/modem: Device or Resource busy" I think my problems may be related to incorrect permissions but it could be anything Any Ideas?
