Hi, I'm trying to make a boot floppy following the procedure on the Suse database (http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/kgw_bootdisketten.html), but it doesn't seem to work. When booting, I get to "LIL" and things stall out. I'm a newbie, so I am probably overlooking something. I'm running on an Athlon K7 system, with a Asus KT7A system, using a 30Gb hard drive. My root device is /dev/hda7. When I installed Suse 7.0, it said I couldn't boot from the hard drive because Windows is on the first 15 Gb of the disk. The bootdisk that Suse made while installing seems to have a formatting problem, and won't read, hence my attempt to make this bootdisk. Any thoughts? Thanks, Derek P.S. (anyone have experience running MATLAB on any of the SuSe versions...thinking about buying a copy and bringing my work home with me) --------------- Here's what I'm doing (as quoted from the web page): fdformat /dev/fd0h1440 # low-level formatting /sbin/mkfs.minix /dev/fd0 1440 # creates minix file system /bin/mount /dev/fd0 /mnt # mount to /mnt cd /mnt mkdir etc dev boot cp -a /boot/vmlinuz /boot/initrd /boot/*.b boot/ cp -a /dev/fd* /dev/null /dev/zero /dev/hd[abcd]* /dev/sd[abcd]* dev Here's the file I wrote to disk, complete with SuSenglish. # LILO configuration file # Start LILO global Section # If you want to prevent console users to boot with init=/bin/bash, # restrict usage of boot params by setting a passwd and using the option # restricted. initrd=/boot/initrd boot=/dev/fd0 #compact # faster, but won't work on all systems. vga=normal read-only prompt timeout=100 # End LILO global Section # image = /boot/vmlinuz root = /dev/hda7 # or whatever you're using as root device label = lx then type lilo -r /mnt

Yeah, it's the most common problem around. You need to make a partiton at the very front of your /dev/hda, only about 10 megs. Use partition magic or parted to move your windows over as small an amount as is allowed. Then boot linux, use fdisk to make a partition in the new empty space, mke2fs on it, then mount /boot there, by editing fstab. Then install lilo, to give you a menu to boot linux or windows. The less elegant option is to install loadlin, and boot linux after you've booted into windows. We have been running Matlab in our SuSE boxes since 6.4 without problems; just make sure you install shlibs5.rpm. Matlab version seems irrelevant as we have updated flawlessly. Hope it helps, Alvaro Novo SuSE 7.1 Pro -=- Kernel 2.4.2-4GB -=- KDE 2.2-beta1 9:51pm up 11 days, 21:48, 1 user, load average: 1.10, 1.09, 1.09
