[SLE] ISP Problem
Hello SuSE folk. I can connect to my ISP using kinternet (pppd) just fine, and stay connected. Problem is that I cannot connect to the web, use e-mail, ftp, nothing. Problems started after an apt-get upgrade. Lots of packages so I don't know which one to blame. I checked every conceivable configuration file in ppp that I could think of. I then reinstalled kinternet from the SuSE CD. No change. This ISP uses PAP-secrets.Right clicking on the kinternet icon,"check connection", shows the dynamic addresses for the ISP and my computer but does not come up with a server name. Only one strange thing that I have found is in the ppp/peers/resolv.conf file. It displays some strange address (206.165.75.20) Where, if I remember correctly should be the DNS server numbers of my ISP. I change it to that DNS and as soon as I connect it reverts to the 206 etc. number.I don't remember or know if it is supposed to do that or not and have no idea what that address is. Checking that number in Windoze says it is unknown. What is it that allows web-browsing, e-mail collection etc. after the connection is established? Need help here; I have run out of ideas. Thanks, Bob S. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com .

What are you using to surf the web? for email? ftp? Actually cover ftp in another thread. What errors does mozilla give you when you go to a site? Are you using Kde, gnome or other? SuSE 8, 8.1, 8.2 or one of the lucky 9.0 users? Have you set up your email client? Do you use fetchmail?

Posting the kinternet log may help. But if you're connected it's probably something else. <snip> Give as much pertinant info as possible. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

Don't know exactly what I did, but I took a look at the Yast Runlevel editor. There was a bunch of stuff in there that did not look right to me so I changed them. Voila, able to connect to the outside world again. Bob s.

Check instead the '/etc/resolv.conf' file during the connection: it should have your dns server. That file is modified by the '/etc/ppp/ip-up script' (actually, the work is done by another one, but it doesn't matter), as a result of the auto-dns setting of the internet configuration. It can be disabled, and use a fixed dns setting (connection setup, and/or /etc/sysconfig/network/config -> MODIFY_RESOLV_CONF_DYNAMICALLY -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Not sure I know what you are asking. Are you saying you have this problem also? If so, are you connecting to your ISP OK, and just not able to communicate to the web? (that was my problem) I don't remember exactly what I changed but am pretty sure that it was either firewall or network related. (If any of the gurus think that I am all wet, please butt in! I would supply you with my list but there are over 50 entries and I have yet to find a way to copy a dialog in Yast2. Try looking first. If you continue having trouble, respond again. Bob S.
