"Microsoft will license the rights to Unix technology from SCO Group, a move that could impact the battle between Windows and Linux in the market for computer operating systems." "According to a statement from Microsoft, the company will license SCO's Unix patents and the source code. That code is at the heart of a $1 billion lawsuit between SCO and IBM, which is aggressively pushing Linux as an alternative to Windows in corporate back shops." "Microsoft's Windows has a monopoly in the market for desktop operating systems, with a market share greater than 90 percent. Linux, which has been developed by thousands of contributors and can be freely obtained, has caught on as a worthy competitor in the market for corporate servers. In the past two years, Microsoft has repeatedly labeled Linux as a threat to the Redmond, Wash.-based computing giant, partly because of its low cost." http://rss.com.com/2100-1016_3-1007528.html?type=pt&part=rss&tag=feed&subj=news Have fun reading this one. This is the move I've been expecting. I think that SCO's intention all along has been to attract Microsoft - not IBM. While IBM's lawyers could crush SCO, it's about to be a battle between two giants. The only ones really hurt will be the little people on the sidelines.

I thought that when Microsoft sold Xenix, that they were prohibited from ever again selling Unix.

m$ doesn't always sell the things they license, for example in the early days of the browser wars m$ licensed spyglass (I believe) browser aggreeing to give spyglass x amount for each copy m$ sold. Well m$ turned around and gave away free copies of the software, since they hadn't actually sold the software they owed spyglass nothing. - -- dh Don't shop at GoogleGear.com! -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.1 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+yOzyBwgxlylUsJARAjtpAJ0TAB+WKSd6vSUbx0FBueCyBXUqEgCfcqZu 2Sp4c/BkjgeuYCvy2kXp9gU= =Znw9 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Is it possible that m$ only licensed the code to provide SCO with funds ($$s) to battle IBM and ergo, Linux ???? -- Patrick Shanahan Please avoid TOFU and trim >quotes< http://wahoo.no-ip.org Registered Linux User #207535 icq#173753138 @ http://counter.li.org Linux, a continuous *learning* experience
That is a consensus opinion locally here.
In poker its called "buying the pot" a strategy for those with funds and
a poor hand.
We mearly need to find out how to call the hand of Microsoft.
Public opinion may be cheaper than a straight monitary fight.
