I just wanted to mention that I spent the entire evening tonight using my copy of 7.1 (hoping to switch over from Windows sometime in the next week), and it works like a dream. My first surprise was at boot (previously I had only booted from the CD), where I was greeted by a very professional replacement to the "LILO:" prompt. That looks nicer than Stormix's boot screen! I then started off by taking Lenz's suggestion and using qt-experimental (which can be found on the DVD if you do a search in YaST2), and running SuSEconfig -modules font (which fixed my "weird font problem"). AA looks wonderful - in fact, it looks better than AA in Windows. The only problem I noticed (as mentioned by someone else on the list) is that Courier New seems to have problems (O's look like C's) in 12 pt. size. Other than that, it's great - see my screenshot: http://www.uninetsolutions.com/images/snapshot1.png . From there, I installed KDE 2.1, which went in superbly, and looks and works great (I like the new KDE 2 theme, which is nearly the same as the SuSE theme). So far I haven't run into any problems, and YaST2 is already becoming one of my favorite tools. BTW, I seem to be getting higher bit-rate downloads in Linux. :-) Whew... it's been a long day in the Land of Linux, and all is well. <g> Can't say I've ever had such a smoothly running day using Linux. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. How: - graphical yast2 installation: Click on the checkbox. There are two, one for 2.2, one for 2.4. The one for 2.2 is already active when you get to that screen, and I'd leave it that way to have a know-to-work fallback kernel. - yast1 install: Install just one of the two kernels (2.2/2.4). Later, in the system, start yast(1) again and go to Administration->Select kernel, and also install the other one you don't have yet. This used to overwrite the kernel yo already have, but not this time, at least not if you choose a different kernel, i.e. if you already have 2.2 and select 2.4 now you'll keep 2.2 as well. How to boot: you'll get a selection in LILO. You'll get the graphical LILO only if you did a graphical install, but even the ASCII lilo has a menu where you see all options right from the start now.
Gary, On the Kernel selection screen, I simply checked both kernels' check boxes. I assume this can be done on the Personal Edition too (if that is what you have), but I did this on the Professional version. That installed them both, and then SuSE's wonderful new LILO screen lets you pick which one to use (I've tried 2.4 so far). Works like a charm. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Butler Universal Networks Information Tech. Soon, I should have a new PC which will allow me that luxury. It must be nice! ;-) jLK On Friday 02 March 2001 14:07, Timothy R. Butler wrote:
