I am sure I miss understand something, .... ;-( I have setup a database on a testing machine with a php program to access this database The php program knows: the database host (here localhost) the database name the database user the database users password the database table If I set the database user as "root" with no password (=== it is an off line testing machine !!!) the program works perfect. If I set the user and password via phpMyAdmin it fails. I have only entry in database mysql / table user an entry for this database. Even I grant all rights, it will not help. Access denied. In phpMyAdmin I type in: Field Type Function Value Host char(60) % User char(16) username Passwd char(16) PASSWORD `users password` in single quote marks What am I missing? bye Ronald

Try logging into mysql using the command line client and see if you can select records from your table. Use: mysql --user=user --password=password databasename You can also use mysqladmin to test security settings, and of course dump the actual settings from the security table. I have never used phpMyAdmin and this is one of the reasons why. If you have a problem, you don't know if it's with your add-on GUI tool or the database. You have to use the command line tools for real troubleshooting so why not use them all the time? If I were you I would do a google search on it, maybe even a groups.google search. Search for something like: "AC 97 modules linux Vaio", drop the Vaio if needed. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
Hi! Thanks for the tip! I'll keep you ... posted! On Tuesday September 10 2002 12:29, zentara wrote:

It is likely that any error message you are getting from the db is not making it through phpMyAdmin, as Keith noted. (Incidentally, you could look at MyCC, on the mySQL site, as a GUI interface - although it's beta, it seems reasonably stable.) Are you sure that you have the relevant user set up in the mysql table, with the correct password, and the correct access rights? One thing that has to be watched out for is that mySQL will actually have two users - user@localhost and user@hostname - and you may be connecting as the wrong one. To get round this, use -hhostname as part of the connection string, or (better) set the password on the two users to be the same thing, using something like: update user set password=password("yourpass") where user ="youruser"; HTH Kevin
