Hi,
Have you guys seen the new NTFS-G3, when you do think we might see it in OpenSUSE?
Once it's considered stable enough - and we take it automatically if it's in Linus upstream kernel with our next version update... You could try building it as a separate kernel-package on the build service. So far it does not work on x86-64 :-( Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

It will never be in Linus' kernel or any other kernel because it is not a kernel driver ;) It's a fuse-based userspace driver that could replace ntfsmount from the ntfsprogs-fuse package. Ah ;-) In that case I suggest to wait until it stabilizes a bit... Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

The ntfsprogs guys will take care of that ;) There is already an announcement on linux-ntfs.org that it is planned to be merged into the ntfsprogs package sooner or later, so it will probably end up in openSUSE automatically, maybe even in time for 10.2. Could someone please give me some pointers to more info on this. I've googled for "NTFS-G3" and only came up with two postings (one in "web" (Vietnamese), and one in "groups" (Chinese)), neither of which I can read. Also, a search of the linux-ntfs.org site, including its Wiki and forums didn't turn up anything I recognized as relevent. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! The download link http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfs-3g-20070714-BETA.tgz is everything that exists right now. It contains the software, a README file with installation instructions (trivial) and the known limitations. There is not much more documentation about it right now. The linux-ntfs.org guys are very busy people, they just don't have the time to document their knowledge and their progress (which is one of the reasons why there are so many rumours and not facts about the NTFS situation on Linux being spread). You can find a very short announcement on linux-ntfs.org in the "Project updates" section and a short mailing list discussion at http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=23836054&forum_id=2697 To summarize it briefly: - It's an enhanced fork of the "ntfsmount" implementation (SUSE distributes this in the "ntfsprogs-fuse" package) - It's currently a fork, but will probably be merged back into the regular ntfsprogs release once it is considered ready - It's not a kernel module, but implemented in user-space using FUSE - It still has some limitations, but in these cases it will just refuse the operation instead of trashing the filesystem - Since it's not an external kernel module, installing it is as simple as "./configure; make; make install", and this will even survive kernel updates - Backup your data before using it. I learned about NTFS-3 from digg.com, they had this link... http://lunapark6.com/?p=1710 I also saw it on OS News a couple days before. http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=15196 And on Slashdot http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/15/1346250 It's for Ubuntu, that is why I wonder why not us? What is for Ubuntu? The driver is for Linux. I cannot find anything specific to Ubuntu under the above links Andreas Hanke PS: If you mean the binary packages, yes, they are for Ubuntu, but anyone who wants can make RPMs in the build service. I have selfmade RPMs for SUSE 10.1 here locally... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org

Andreas, When I said for Ubuntu, I meant that first link on digg, where they are explaining how to install them on Ubuntu. Personal note on why I like to see in SUSE is, I work in office where I am the only SUSE user, I get picked on all the time because everyone else is either Ubuntu or Debian. I can say one thing that has my co-workers green, I have XGL working on my shuttle box and they all can't stand it. Luckily the source tarball includes a README file explaining how to install the driver on any Linux distro ;) For SUSE 10.1 you don't even need to install 3rd party fuse updates, because the shipped fuse version is recent enough. Now, all that remains to be done is finding a volunteer with a buildservice account to build RPMs ;) Andreas Hanke --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-help@opensuse.org
