Hi all: SuSE 7.1 finally arrived last Friday in the Mail. I did the recommended install w/office. Used the 2.2.18 kernal and Resisf(sp) everything went well, my 3d acelleration for 3dfx4 4500 card works well etc. the only problem is that I was not able to get my ADSL working. I use adsl from earthlink, supplied by Verizon. It is PPPoe with a dynamicly assigned ip. The first ^^^^^^^^^ problem noted was a long delay with boot-up and the expected complaint that ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ no address was assigned DHCP not started, nic not active. I configured using ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
You configured the network card for DHCP during installation. DHCP and PPPoE does not work together because when no DHCP server is found, dhcpcd puts the eth0 interface DOWN but pppoe needs the interface UP. Solution: Enter YaST2 network card configuration, disable DHCP for the network card and set a fixed addess (e.g. `192.168.0.1').
YaST2 the adsl module giving the usual user name, password, interface card to use etc. This gave me the proper icon a plug in the tray. It all seemed to go with out problem. When I click on the plug icon to connect to the internet, I get the inital lighting bolt then nothing. The connection log is blank. And I am unsure where to look, as I am unfamilir with connections via PPPoEd. I am more use to rp-pppoe. Help!
Yours sincerely, Lionel Marks

Lionel, et al, I just went through a rather interesting experience wtih my ADSL. Everyting seemed to be in order, but I couldn't get connected. I use rp_pppoe, mostly because I have had it working for a year. I have always had dhcp enabled on the router. I'm pretty sure, at one point that was necessary, and I don't want to play with what is now working. I did try many different combinations before I realized what was wrong. I finally realized what the problem was when I tried to run adsl-setup and was infromed that my fine /usr/sbin/pppd. PPP was installed, but for some reason the pppd file was missing. My named is not starting from the init script, and my firewall is not starting. Also, for some reason, ssh was installed along with openssh, so now my sshd won't start either. I'm not sure why all these broke, but I hope someone at SuSE will look into this. If others have had similar experiences please share them. I am not looking to collect a bunch of emotional attacks on the product. I just want the facts from different sources so we can identify and help fix this problem so it doesn't happen again. Perhaps the problem is due to somethign I had done to take the system out of a standard configuration. The only reasonable way to try and figure this out is to get other peoples observations. This *was* very time consuming, and a bit frustrating. Steve
Why does the PHP4 update for 7.1 have a filed dependency on /usr/bin/php? What is that?
