I recently updated the kernel on my opensuse 10.1 installation, new kernel is version: 2.6.16.21-0.25-default Now when I boot I am getting this message during the process several times, I pasted this from the /var/log/messages file << modprobe: WARNING: Failed to open included config file /etc/modprobe.conf.local: Permission denied
I have tried to do an ls -al /etc/modprobe* and I get the following message: << ns1:/var/log # ls -al /etc/modprobe* /bin/ls: /etc/modprobe.conf.local: Permission denied -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14427 Aug 6 18:44 /etc/modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.d: total 48 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 288 Oct 6 22:16 . drwxr-xr-x 101 root root 8384 Oct 16 21:20 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6557 Jun 2 15:48 blacklist -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 366 Apr 22 20:48 ibm_acpi -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 33 Apr 22 22:25 ipw2200 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 858 Sep 19 06:44 module-renames -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86 Apr 22 22:27 nvidia -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6473 Apr 22 22:25 prism2 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 121 Jun 5 19:19 sound -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 286 Jun 5 19:19 tv -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jun 5 19:17 tv.YaST2save ns1:/var/log #
Can anyone explain this to me and possibly give me a cure for this ailment? John -- Registered Linux User 263680, get counted at http://counter.li.org

i'm suspecting that modprobe.conf.local is a directory. A file won't show this error via 'ls' unless perhaps the filesystem is corrupt. e.g.: stephan@owl:~> touch foo.bar stephan@owl:~> chmod 0000 foo.bar stephan@owl:~> l foo.bar ---------- 1 stephan users 0 2006-10-17 06:04 foo.bar (the point being - no error) assuming modprobe.conf.local is a dir, try: chmod 0755 modprobe.conf.local -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. To see if it is a directory, use the following command: ls -ld /etc/modprobe.conf.local The -d tells ls to list the directory and not the contents of the directory. /etc/modeprobe.conf.local is a file on my system 10.1. Mike stephan beal wrote:

chmod 0755 modprobe.conf.local

Assuming it is a reiserfs partition, boot from the rescue system (installation CD/DVD) and run fsck on the partition. Known problem. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
