[opensuse] Removing hardware safely
Back in my 9.3 days, I recall when I removed hardware, my installation of 9.3 would go on the fritz and I would have to re-install. I have two dvd-rw drives on this box (10.3) and need to take one out. What is the recommended procedure for safely removing this ide device? Thanks, -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

init 6 remove power source remove case elements necessary for access ground case and self/or self to case unplug wired connections release device retaining hardware replace removed case elements remove self-to-case grounding connect power start system afaik, has been this way for ages. - -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn4472 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHLKyXClSjbQz1U5oRAmSTAJ9B872RbD1Jqkojqtf2a4Q4YH6XywCaAmtp tUQH34vT1RN1wLedJg6iTk0= =/obg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

init 6
I think "init 0" would be a better choice here -
remove power source remove case elements necessary for access
ground case and self/or self to case
unplug wired connections release device retaining hardware replace removed case elements
remove self-to-case grounding
connect power start system
afaik, has been this way for ages.
For the most part correct, but if the removal of the device caused a re-naming of remaining devices, there would also be a need to boot up into rescue mode and edit e.g. /etc/fstab, and fix grub to account for the new partition naming. But in any case, as he said, no reinstall is needed, only the tweaking of a few key parameters. Given that init 6 is reboot, yes, I agree :) Or "poweroff", which is easier to remember

That shouldn't happen in 10.3, the devices should all get unique names which should be static no matter what you put in or remove Anders -- Madness takes its toll -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

True, but up to 10.2 suse was still using the old style device names, and that's actually still an option in 10.3. Joe -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks. Actually, what I was looking for was whether there were procedures within suse to tell it that the device will no longer exist in the system. Physically removing the hardware as you described, I can do. :-) I had this problem back in 9.3. (Actually, it was swapping out hardware) where the system would become unresponsive upon bootup until I switched back to the original hardware. That's probably an entirely different scenario from simply removing hardware. -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You could run Yast2, Hardware, Hardware Information, which causes it to rescan all your hardware and possibly get rid of left over info regarding the removed hardware. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's a good tidbit to know. I appreciate you and everyone else chiming in with the good advice. As it turns out, unlike my 9.3 days, this was a non-event. Computer didn't balk at all. :-) Thanks all! -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Remove all power, don't just turn off the power switch. Ground yourself to the case occasionally. Try not to jab yourself with the screwdriver. ;-) -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
