Hi all, I want to back up a DVD and change the region code in the process. I can dump the stream using mplayer, but I'm not sure what format I should dump it in (raw, vob, something else?). More importantly, I don't know what tool(s) I should use to burn the output DVD. K3b looks like it has something that might burn a DVD, but it looks like it's offering to burn a data DVD, not a video. Which man pages should I be looking at? Any more detailed suggestions? Hi, first, be aware, that backup of a copirighted DVD may be illegal in some countries :) Anyway, to backup a DVD to your hard drive, removing the protection and the region code, you need to install: libdvdread - from packman's site liddvdcss - from videolan site you also nee dvdbackup (google). if above libs are present, dvdbackup can backup the whole dvd, or only a givven title/chapter. The problem comes, when you need to burn it. Most of the movie DVD's are 9 GB, which does not fit on a regular DVD+/-R (4.2 GB). Of course, you can use dual layer media and burner, bur still the media is expensive (4$ and more). You can google for a script, named dvd9to5, which uses transcode (tcrequant) to downgrade a little bit of the quality, so you can fit the main movie on a single layer media. The problem with this approach is, that you are loosing the menus and special features. Anyway, if you just want to backup a move, so you can throw it to kids and don't care if they are going to damage the media, this is enough. Cheers Sunny -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)

You can also remaster the dvd using dvdshrink (google for it) , which runs fine under wine, to fit the whole dvd into 4.4 GB. FX

I was after "pure" linux solution :)
Go to packman.links2linux.org and under multi-media there are a couple of programs that you might find useful. I tried them, and for the most part they work. Mplayer/Mencoder, transcode, lxdvdrip, avidemux etc, most of them listed in Packman... You can keep busy for weeks learning how to use them. Just make sure you have a large hard drive and don't burn anyting on dvd until you have the proper combination of performance and file size.

I'm aware of all this. I just responded to FX's suggestion about DvdShrink. I already responded to OP with some suggestions :) Cheers -- -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny)
Thanks to all for the suggestions so far. mplayer fetches the vob
(seemingly unconcerned about the region coding... Is it silently using
up the five changes on my dvd drive?) and mencoder seems like it'll be
able to create a smaller vob--when I finally work out what options I
should be using!
But my remaining problem is that I can't see how to get a vob burned
onto a DVD disk so that it becomes a real DVD disk. K3B seems to burn
ISO images not from vob.
What should I look up for this part of the process?
Thanks again,
Simon

Simon, I just went through what you are doing. Let me tell you my solution, lxdvdrip! what a neat idea. After going through all the machinations to install all the required programs, I now put the dvd in the reader, type lxdvdrip on the command line, play with mommie, then burn a perfect dvd with K3b. It's that easy! I have found a few dvds that I havent been able to copy but most are easy. One more caveat, dont use cheap dvd media! I have a bunch of new printable no-name dvds that make a decent copy for about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way then go nuts. The better media works fine burning the same iso. You can start by looking here: http://developer.berlios.de/projects/lxdvdrip/ Regards, Richard

I should have given the following url: http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=lxdvdrip It'll give you most of the info you need to get started with lxdvdrip. RA

Nowhere that I know of, but changing the region code probably is :-)
Anyway, to backup a DVD to your hard drive, removing the protection and the region code, you need to install: libdvdread - from packman's site liddvdcss - from videolan site
libdvdread is already in SuSE 9.3, maybe in earlier versions too. I certainly do not remember selecting it, so it must be part of the dependencies from what I did choose. However, I am unable to find out what requires it. libdvdnav is also installed, and nothing seems to depend on it. Maybe I should try to remove them in Yast and see what complaints are triggered :-)
you also nee dvdbackup (google).
There is also an unrelated kdvdbackup which is already on packman in rpm format for SuSE 9.3.

It is also worth checking out transcode, which is used by k3b and is also on packman.
